I am putting a 3x9 on my new AR, I see some that use regular rings and some that move the scope ahead of where it is mounted to the rifle by varying amounts. How do you know (I am assuming by eye relief) how far ahead you need to have your scope sit?
It really depends upon the scope and how much eye relief it has. Three of my ARs are scoped; I use an SWFA SALT mount for my Bushnell AR 1-4x, medium rings for my Nikon P-223 3x (both on 16" carbines) and medium rings and a YHM riser for the 6.5-20x 50mm on my DPMS Bull 24. The two lower power scopes have around 3 1/2" of eye relief, while I can adjust the eye relief on big scope from as close as 2" up to 4".
Whatever makes you comfortable. Mount in lower rings and square up to the gun like you're shooting it. Move the scope back and forth until it's in a desired position. Move away from the rifle and back into position several times to ensure it works based on your natural approach and purchase.
