I am going to install some optics on my rifle. I am thinking about buying the Aimpoint Pro, but wanted to ask if something else is recommended.

My budget is in the $300-500 range.

Any help?

There are a lot of dudes here that can give you guidance, but I'd suggest being a little more specific about what you're using the rifle for and what you want out of the optic.  You're going to get recommendations for everything from varmint scopes to red dot sights otherwise.

Oh sorry, I am looking for a red dot style optic for general range use and home defense.

It will be mounted on my Spike's Tactical M4 16" build.

This is about the same exact question I have, but in a different thread, and I am also considering the Leupold VX-R Patrol 1.25-4.  Anyhow, it's interesting the MRO is getting some love here, whereas the PRO and the VX-R were the front-runners from feedback in my thread.  I hope you have an easier time making a decision than I am.

I think that's what I will go with then. I have MagPul MBUS 2 backup sights. Which mount should I get for the MRO? MidwayUSA lists low, full co-witness, and lower 1/3 co-witness.

It's going to come down to the Trijicon MRO and the Aimpoint PRO (assuming you don't want an EOTech after their problems).  I've never used the PRO before, but really like the MRO.  Don't think you can go wrong with either.  FWIW, the PRO weighs a few ounces more and is almost 2 inches longer.  Battery life on MRO is supposedly better (5 years vs 3.5 according to their tech specs).

There are great red dots in the 200-300 range, but if you're willing to spend up to $500 I think you'll find the consensus will be the PRO and the MRO.

Also, just my two cents, but I buy the optics that I can through Brownells because their return policy is unlimited lifetime - if you decide you don't like the optic or something is wrong with it and the manufacturer won't fix it, just send it back.  You can probably find it a little cheaper elsewhere, but its worth the peace of mind to me when I'm dropping $500.

Just depends on what kind of cowitness you want.  If you get the full co-witness, the BUIS and red dot will line up perfectly when both sighted in, which is my preference (easy to check that both are aligned properly if you know that one or the other is zero'd).  I also find that just about right for cheek weld for me personally.  1/3 cowitness means the sights will show in the bottom third of the optic, which means a taller mount.  A lot of people like that too.  Only go low if you're looking to stay as compact as possible because (a) it won't cowitness and (b) this will probably be the hardest to get a good cheek weld quickly.

Could you name some of the great red dots in the 200-300 range? I might look at those as well.

So I've never used any of these, but from what I've gathered on here, people really like the Primary Arms MD-ADS, which is basically an Aimpoint H1 clone, and the Vortex options.  Some of the Holosuns get good reviews.  The Meprolight M21 is another higher end option (~$500) that's becoming popular.  No batteries, with the benefits and drawbacks that comes with.  There are also a lot of mini red dots out there like the Trijicon RMR, the Vortex options, Burris Fast Fire, etc. that are good but are really optimized for pistols due to their very small size and low profile.

Personally, if you're serious about home defense, I'd get the Aimpoint or Trijicon because of their rock solid reputations and they're not that much more expensive, but if it's just for fun I think these other options will serve you just as well.  When I buy my next red dot, it'll be an MRO, but I'm personally never happy with buying "good enough" so I save for the better option.  Just my personal approach and why my wife is threatening to put me on an allowance.

The BUIS and red dot will line up with any cowitness... just says where the dot will be when that happens.  Lower 1/3 keeps the BUIS or fixed irons out of the way if you leave them up.  Not much difference otherwise.

I like my MRO pretty well at the price point.  Did the LaRue MRO and mount combo.
