I found one of these in the back of my safe that shipped free with my 1-4x a few months ago.

Thought about using it for my most recent build for a rifle class gun (probably stuff a cheap Vortex 1-4x in there).

Is this thing any good (don't plan on removing it once it's mounted) or should I just spring for something pricier?

I have one. It's good for the price.

I agree. I would lap it, my rings were not quite perfect. I don't think it would hurt the scope any, but I'm anal about properly lapped rings.

Other than that I love the mount.

Mine has held up well. I only regret that its so heavy and clunky (maybe that helps with durability lol). I wish I had spent the $30 extra and gotten the Aero Precision mount.

It's very very similar to the Burris PEPR mount.  I have both and the quality is similar with a slight nod to the Burris.

I used it to mount a Vortex Strike Eagle to my 6.8 hunting AR.  Seems to work just fine and I don't intend to remove the scope so no need for QD.

It should work fine.  Not the fanciest or lightest, but nothing wrong with it.

Cool. I think the only reason I didn't use it was because LaRue was running a special on mounts and a SWFA looks better with a LaRue

Vortex on a 556 should be perfect.
