OK, so here's the deal.  I've had 45 degree offset BUIS on my rifle for a few years, and I actually like them a lot.  The rifle is scoped, and I like having the scope as low as possible.  I read a lot of trash about 45 degree sites, but I've never understood why there is so much animosity.  Is there a good technical reason why 45 degree sites suck, or have they just been tarnished by the mall ninjas?

They're fine. I don't have any on my scoped rifles personally, but I can see the utility for certain situations. I think most of the animosity comes from people who have never actually used them, just bandwagon hating on mall-ninjas.

If you need them, use them, practice with them, get good with them, disregard the haters.

I have them on my scoped AR.  2 reasons.
1.  I don't like not having irons. Most rugged sighting system.
2. I enjoy shooting with irons over everything else.

I would like to try out the different options, red dot @ 45 vs BUIS @ 45. Any suggestions?

I run both my AR's with two optics. Each has a scope and a 45* mini reflex (AR15 & AR15-22). I love the ability to transition close quarters very quickly with a good red dot. I run primary arms on my one gun and Bushnell on the other. I also have a pair of 45* irons, but prefer the red dot over irons.

I've never really heard anyone hating on them but I bet anyone complaining about them have never used them or been in a situation where they had to be used.

DOn't get me wrong, I've never been in that situation either but I have to believe that in those circumstances it would be much easier to deploy the BUIS, give the rifle a little twist and keep fighting versus having to fumble with some throw levers and remove your primary then deploy your BUIS and then get back in the fight.

I love 45 degree iron sights.  I have them on all four of my scoped rifles.  Three of them have the Magpul pro offset's and one uses the KAC 45 Degree 200-600m Offset.

I can shoot them right handed fine , its when I transition to left that makes them a no go for me.

I'm left handed so I have to put them on the left handed side, but of course they are backwards but function the same.  I'm guessing your right handed?  It would make sense if so and you have problems using them like a lefty.

My scoped rifle is a Northtech Defense upper / lower set, and the Magpul offset sights won't work on this upper.  The "larger than usual" forward assist machining keeps them from fitting on where you'd normally mount them.  This is unfortunately something I didn't think of until I had already bought the sight set.  I would think there are other billet upper owners out there who would probably have the same issue.  I thought about hanging the rear sight off the 15" handguard / rail, but decided against it.

The GG&G rear sight is great for forward receiver mounting. I have them, and like them a lot.  GG&G

Thank you for the suggestion. I would have been able to do this with the Magpul set also.  I just decided against it thinking that accuracy would suffer.  In the end, these are primarily for backup anyway, so maybe it would have been fine.

Well, That would depend on your rail.  I have a 15" rail, so the sights have a good deal of distance between them.  The rear peep is larger than standard rear sights for the sole purpose of them being more forward on the receiver.  On mine, the two rings match uo perfectly, and acquire target much faster than standard sights.  Not sure what the magpul would look like at that distance.  Im sure you will have to use the larger aperture just to see the front.

I never considered 45 degree offset irons gimmicky or mall ninja-esqe.  They have a purpose, and those who run them and run them hard find utility in the application.
