Am I crazy?
I have an 18" BCM SPRish upper. I'm thinking about putting my leupold vxr patrol 1-4x on it. It currently has a WTGS 3-10x on it. I won't really shoot much beyond 3-400 yards and wouldn't mind moving the current optic to a .308. It shoots great and I know I'd be giving up some magnification but the Leupold glass is so much better I don't think I'd be giving up much. It's mostly for punching paper, steel, and the occasional coyote/deer. |

I guess it would just be turning into a RECCE.
Not a bad thing. Depending on what you're wanting to do, 4X is plenty at 3-400 yards. I've shot my NXS 1-4 out to 500 quite a bit and I keep 'em on a 10" target. You might be able to see it better with more magnification, but magnification won't make up for a poor range estimate or wind call... |

I look at those small 20 & 24mm objectives and always think Why? Doesn't seem to be any gain when the rear aperture is a normal size. Why not just get something with a 32mm - 42mm objective to get the extra light?
I just picked up 2-10x36 illuminated Weaver Super Slam for $400 on sale at Natchez for $400, glass is excellent and $2bills less than your Leupold from what I see. Since it's on your SPR you might consider the higher mag and piggyback a RMR style site. It's probably just my personal preference, I know Leupold puts out a good product....maybe there is a slight weight savings...? |

The 2-10x Weaver at natchez is exactly what I opened this thread to mention. My understanding is the glass is made at the same factory Nightforce and Vortex Razor glass comes from |
| I re-read your first post...see now that you already have both optics. Thought you were buying a new scope. Yeah, if you already have both scopes...I agree you should put the higher mag on the 308. I'm using my SPR for hunting, hence the 1-6x optic for fast shots when I'm walking. The 2-10x would work just as well on the SPR but I'm putting it on the 20" Varminter, figure it would be more appropriate for longer shots. |

Quoted: SNIP The glass on the new scope is very good, but box says Made in Japan, I'm not sure about NF and Vortex...thought Vortex came from China (but I know Vortex has good optics). SNIP Vortex sources glass from multiple countries depending on the target price of the optic. IIRC most Vipers have glass made in the Philippines. Cheaper Vortex optics have glass made in China and Razors have glass made in Japan. |

I have a VX-R Patrol (although it is the 3-9x40mm) and also have the Weaver GST. Both are fine scopes. The Weaver is probably the best $299 tactical scope on the market. But, the VX-R glass is noticeably better, and the motion activated Firedot makes for fast target acquisition.
Unless you will be shooting in low light where a larger objective would help, the increased optical quality and more useful SPR reticle would cause me to favor the Leupold for the SPR rifle. You really don't need more than 4x for shooting mostly at 300 yards and less. |
