| I'm searching for an EOtech 551, mainly due to price, otherwise I'd get an XPS3. Anyway, might have found one. Wondering for those that have used them extensively, what kind of upkeep should I do with it? I hear people recommend not storing the batteries in the unit, changing batteries every 3 months or so, etc. This unit is a 2008 unit that has been serviced before. Should I do it? I prefer a short EOtech for my HK416 build. Thanks in advance. |
You're doing an HK416 build, yet you're concerned about the cost of a relatively cheap optic?
Anyways, it's really impossible to tell if the Eotech you're looking at purchasing will have battery drain issues. Best way to tell is to purchase it and see if the batteries go dead being kept in the unit. |

I'm just trying to get this project as close to finished as possible. If more people chime in, I may just say screw it and go with the XPS3. Hoping Asmig can jump in. |

You could always pick up a used XPS-2. They usually go for around $350-$375, and if you're not looking for NV compatibility, they look the same as an XPS-3. If you're looking for NV, then I think you're stuck.

I have two 551 eotech sights.
"N" batteries are somewhat hard to find, they cost much more than they are worth due to short battery life in the units. If you leave the batteries in the unit, it is very likely that in a few weeks to a few months you will find them dead. I have had two which were on range guns, a .22lr build and a 9mm carbine. When I went to the range I would put batteries in the units AND took spare batteries... it was not unusual for me to use the spares. I have replaced the 551 on both rifles with newer Eotech models. I have considered selling them on ebay, but I fear even if I warn about battery internal drain, and short battery life, the buyer will claim I screwed them on the deal. No I will not sell them. |
