I using a Leupold Mark 4 3-9  with a Mildot reticle. I've had the scope for over ten years and it still treats me well on my Noveske SPR.

I have several different Vortex optics, I think 5 altogether, and I am very happy with them all.  My favorite may be the Vortex Viper HS here: http://www.vortexoptics.com/product/vortex-viper-hs-4-16x50-riflescope-with-v-plex-moa-reticle.  I prefer the Dead Hold BDC reticle.

No BDC limitations on ammo here.  Leupold VX-R Patrol 3-9x40mm illuminated Firedot TMR.  Fully MRAD, both turrets and reticle.

If I were to opt for the Vortex 2.5-10x32 again it would be the HS LR variant with the capped turrets and XLR reticle.  As far as glass goes, this is one of Vortex's best.

ETA: That said, I'd prefer anything 10x and under to be SFP.  The NightForce 2.5-10x32 MOAR is perfect for an SPR in that regard.

My only issue with the Vortex or even that NF is that low light performance and eyebox are both seriously degraded at 10x with only the 32mm objective and resulting small 3.2mm exit pupil.  You need a 40mm objective to address that issue.

I think the newer model 42mm version of the NF came about for this purpose exactly.  I think.  I'm no expert on optics but I think your opinion is probably spot on.  If I had the money on hand I would look at the NF.

But since were on the topic of SPR scopes, what's the consensus on the XTR II's?  Specifically the 2-10 and 3-15 models guys?  I know they are on opposite ends of the spectrum but March has some that appear to have great features.  I need to buy an expensive scope like I need a hole in the head, but it doesn't stop me wanting one for my SPR-ish rifle.

What are you building--a clone, or a generic SPR?  If a clone, then the choice has already been made for you.  Otherwise, any good optic from Vortex, Leopold, Nightforce, or other top tier company would suffice.  If you will be shooting in low light, then illuminated reticles can be nice.  If you choose a mil-dot reticle, then there is no BDC.  BDCs can be confusing, as they only work with certain ammo, or you have to learn your holds for the BDC.  Mil-dots work for all types of ammo, particularly with a free ballistic calculator app for your smart phone.  I would not go with something much under 10X if you were looking to do long range shooting.  A quality variable powered optic in the 3.5-10x range with at least a 40mm front objective should work adequately.  Some like higher magnification at long range, so a 4.5-14x range may work better for them.

Personally, I also like Leopold, and have used their Mark 4 series on 2 rifles.  They do tend to be spend, and arguably, there are better scopes for the money, or equal scopes for less money.  I did pick up one on the EE for a SIGNIFICANT discount though, so look around and you can find deals.

I run a Leupold Mark AR mod 1  3-9  fire dot and could not be happier.

mil/mil  with 0.1 mil adjustments and 0.5 reticle marks

The Mark AR uses a 1" tube and has a green dot

The VXR  uses a 30mm tube and has a red dot

Both are very light weight for an adjustable optic

Here's a spreadsheet I made when looking for a scope for my new RRA 18" AR.   The weights are in oz,  length inches, objectives mm, tube inch or mm.  Hope its a help to someone.

The key things for me were price, weight, and field of view.

I ran a Leupold MK4 M3 10x on my SPR.  I sold that rifle and am running an SPR/RECCE rifle with a MK4 4.5-14X 40mm with M1 knobs.  It is a 2nd gen Premiere mil dot conversion.  I have the same conversion but in a 50mm objective on my 5r 700.  It is easy to transition between the 2 and when I do any 2 man team shoots it makes calling shots and wind so much nicer.

How did you like the MK 4 10X?   I had one with M1 knobs and it was ok, but optical clarify was not all that great.  It seemed like I never could get it to produce a crisp image.  It tracked well, I used it out past 800 with MK262.  It got the job done but kinda sucked.   I can almost shoot my Nightforce1-4 as far as I could MK4 10X.   That MK4 was made in '98....

My experience with the Vortex 2.5-20x32 was that it was a nice scope, but not for me. The small eye box at 10x wasn't what bothered me the most. With it being a FFP I could barely make out the reticle at 2.5x, and the illumination wasn't bright enough in daylight to assist.

Now this is just my opinion based on poor eyes, and a lot of people love this scope, but I'm now under the belief that most FFP under 10x aren't for me. The reticle has to be small so it's not too thick at higher powers; I just couldn't use it at 2.5x.

What intrigues me, and I want to eventually get a hold of, is Bushnell's newer LRHS. It is FFP also, but has the circle to help out with lower magnification. It has good reviews, but I haven't seen it in person, and there are lots of options at that price point.

I have the VX-R 3-9x that others have mentioned, and I love that scope. It's lightweight, good glass, and my poor eyes can pick up the reticle.

No, it will be done in by itself in low light.  Fail.  Use it in good light or get something with a larger objective and the tiny 3.2mm exit pupil will be unforgiving even in good light.  You have to absolutely center your eye.  Slide off center even one mm on the eyepiece and it tanks at 10x.

NF scopes are generally superb.  Not that one.  I like that it is MRAD and NF quality, but that is not enough to compensate for a 32mm objective at 10x. Sorry.

I've got a vortex diamondback 4-12 on one of mine and a 12x M223 on the other. I love both but the glass on the Nikon is better.

What's your budget?  I'm partial to the 3-18 Leupold MK6 with a Horus reticle.
