I have a Wyndam Weaponry carbine length AR, I want to replace the sights with flip up and mount the front one on a gas block with rails. I've seen several gas blocks with rails on all 4 sides and honestly they look cheaper than what I expected. What should I be looking for? I'm sure other people have done the same, what should I avoid?
Thanks in advance |

Because many of, but definitely not all, of the type of gas block you are wanting to use are garbage. I would give you a solid recommendation but I did like the poster above you said and mounted a low-pro with sight on rail.
Keep in mind that with a good rail the movement is a non-issue for the most part. Besides, even with a barrel mounted sight movement or pressure is still an issue. Your barrel will flex. When I was using a setup like yours I could sling up tight, using the sling for support and move my POI several inches. Hopefully someone can recommend a quality gas block of the type you seek. I simply don't have enough info on which ones are good. Just wanted to try and explain some of the reasoning many of us have. |

Why avoid it? I just put a magpul handguard on it yesterday. I was under the impression you dont want it on the rail on the handguard because it can move a small amount throwing the front site off where the gas block stays stable and consitent. Because what BUIS will you use? Not a MBUS, I can tell you that. Unless you like molten plastic. Whatever you use, how exactly do you plan on deploying it when it gets hot as hell? Then again...you will search long and hard to find a BUIS of that bastardized height to even work. Then like the poster above this mentioned...most of the gasblocks like this are junk. Why? Well...because noone does this who buys quality gear, typically, because they have BTDT and know it's a bad idea as a whole. Sorry to be so forceful about it, but I just think it's a really crappy idea. |

I take it you have a FSB?
I'm going to stray from the posters above and ask why you need a folding front BUIS? A standard FSB does it's job perfectly fine and if you are properly using your optic, it doesn't interfere. I see this a lot around here, and in the majority of cases, it's usually a newer guy who spends more time looking at his gun than shooting it, trying to throw money at a problem he thinks he has, when in all actuality it isn't a problem at all. About the only time I'd suggest moving to a folding front BUIS is if you're looking to install a longer rail that covers the gas block. There are zero logical reasons to ditch a FSB in favor of a railed gas block. |

I plan on adding an optic but for the most part I've always been an iron sights guy and figured I would get good sights for it and get them zeroed in and get used to them before I spent the money on the optic. Also figured that while the FSB is fine with an optic why not get one that flips down out of the way. I saw those gas blocks and honestly the first thing that came to mind was what other people said, they look cheap and in my original post I said that they seemed to cost less than I expected which also made me think they were cheap. My thought was also that I could mount a bipod to the bottom rail.
I don't buy guns to look at, I do live in IL (-5 outside now) and havent done much shooting of my rifle the last couple months so I've spent a lot of my time loading ammo for it this winter. I am a newbie in terms of customizing the AR, but not a fool that will be taken by junk upgrades which I am sure there is a huge market for junk parts for these guns. The magpul handguard does seem pretty solid, and feels stronger than the stock one. If I end up deciding to go this route I'll mount the front site to it with a good low profile gas block. Originally I wanted to go with the Magpul Pro....yes, I've seen the copies on ebay no worries on being forceful 12_gauge, thats why I asked the question.....I like straight answers |
