looking for an optic for an 5.56 AR. The gun is used on a bench rest shooting various size targets at various distances. That really narrows down the choices to every optic ever made. Not really. OP is doing benchrest shooting. I admit his post is a little vague, but the benchrest term substantially limits the range of options. What OP needs for benchrest is a reticle with a very fine center aiming point, very high magnification, and very fine and accurate turret adjustments. This usually means 1/8" per click turrets, at least 24x fixed power magnification, and fine crosshairs with or without a 1/8 MOA dot. That assumes standard targets (various sizes), but high contrast black on white. More detail would be helpful. Budget limitations, if any are obviously important. The defacto standard 100 yard benchrest scope is the Leupold Competition 45x45mm at about $1100. However, variable power may be useful to combat mirage at longer ranges. Many people use varmint scopes like my 6-24x50mm Pentax Lightseeker 30, a co-branded Burris Black Diamond, with BDC dot reticle and target turrets, no longer made, to provide some versatility to their setup. These scopes are long and heavy, have very limited field of view at high power, but effective on fixed targets in good light. |
