I'm looking for a hunting scope and specifically the vortex viper (basic model, not HS, PST, etc). I'd need the 3-9x. Does anyone have this scope? Thoughts? Anything else in that price range I should look at?

I have the 2-7x with their ballistic reticle. I am impressed with it and kept the scope when I recently sold the rifle it was on.

I've had quiet a few vipers over the years and currently use a 3-9x40 bdc and a 2-7x32 with bdc on two hunting rifles. The glass is better than nikon monarch and to my eyes better than a weaver grand slam. I would probably say leupy vx3 is better. I have all the mentioned scopes. The viper series is a good buy and would reccomend it.

I would hope so haha It's another $260 according to the MSRP...that much over budget I'd bump up to a leupold vx-3 or vortex diamondback hp.

I'd try to handle these at under $300 before buying the 3x9 viper ,  3x10 and 2x10, oh and the 3x15 Weaver SS retails at $570 and the Viper HS 6-24x50 LR FFP is $899 , but to me the Weavers glass is better

I think we're talking about different scopes. I'm looking at:http://www.vortexoptics.com/product/vortex-viper-3-9x40-riflescope-dead-hold-bdc-reticle which is the top of my price range (can be had for $325-$350).

Weaver super slams are considerably higher (at least MSRP which is usually proportional to actual price):
