| Of these three scopes, Vortex Viper PST, Burris MTAC, or Bushnell AR223, all in 1-4x24, which would y'all recommend most to put on a Recce style build? |
I couldn't be any happier with my 1-4X PST. When I first ordered mine a couple of my buddies who are somewhat of optic and AR snobs sat there and told me it was a waste of money and I'd end up wanting to replace it sooner than later. According to them $500 wasn't enough $$ to get a good quality scope for a high end AR...I believe $850-$1K was their "minimum" . After I got my PST they checked it out and went from saying "let me see this thing" with eyes rolling to "this really isn't that bad" to "man I'm really liking this reticle" to "where did you buy yours again?" They both now own one and one of them bought a second Vortex scope, the PST 2.5-10x32.
There are a lot of reasons I like the 1-4X PST so much. First thing that really made an impression on me was how bright and clear the view was. Definitely better than I was expecting out of a mid priced scope. Second is the retcle. I find it very easy to center a close range or moving target on 1X and the small center dot makes precise aiming at further distances easy as it doesn't cover much of the target. The turrets are very crisp with zero mushiness that seems to be common in a lot of scopes in its price range or below. I like how the illumination is set-up with an off position between easy level. I also just flat out like how it looks on my rifle. Honestly I don't have a single negative thing to say about it...maybe daytime illumination would be nice but honestly I don't see a real need for illumination when it's bright out. |
| So, based on the responses I've gotten in this and another thread, I've decided I'm gonna go with the Vortex. One last question, get the MIL/MIL version or the MOA version, or does it really matter that much? Most places only seem to have the MOA version in stock right now. |

I do a lot of machine work, so something in a base 10 system like mils is very natural for me to use. Other folks seem more comfortable with MOA, as inches and random divisions of them make more "sense."
The reticle and turret matching each other, and above all the scope being front focal, is more important than mil vs. MOA. |

Another option in the price range would be the Leupold VX-R Patrol 1.25-4x20 with Firedot SPR reticle. It has a 30 mm main tube and the motion activated illuminated dot is very nice. The SPR reticle has a large circle around the dot and accurate milrad calibrated subtensions to go with the .1 mil marked low profile milrad turrets. I have the 3-9x40mm version and find this to be an incredible system for accurate close up to midrange shooting. The glass is very nice, probably somewhere between VX-2 and VX-3 quality. Leupold lifetime warranty. I really like that the dot is very small (.3 mil or about 1 MOA, is true red, and comes on instantly when you pick up the rifle and goes off if completely stationary for 5 full minutes. This makes it ready to use 24/7 like Aimpoint. No big bulging illumination turret on your eyepiece. Just a simple button where a side focus dial would otherwise be. Of course, you can turn the circuit off completely for transport. I don't know how long battery life will turn out to be. I've had mine about a year and a half and still running the original battery. I suspect that with my range and hunting use, it will last many years. |
