Any love for the old skool Eotech 512 still?  How do you guys think they rate, in the reliability and toughness factors?  Thinking about getting one for a throwdown rifle, but just wanted opinions.

I have been using a 512 for a couple of years with no problems whatsoever. I admit that I have not particularly stressed it either. Anyway, for the money, works fine.

Make sure it's got the new style (post 2009) battery bumper/contacts in the battery compartment, the originals were individually glued in and were prone to falling out, the newer ones have a dog-bone shape and are pressed/wedged into the battery compartment and will not come out.

I've got a few different Eotechs, and that is the only problem I've had, other than an old (2005) 552 that I bought used that would drain batteries, sent that in and had it fixed.

You can order the upgrade to the new battery contacts.

I did a trade with a friend for an older (barely used) 512, and beween the guy testing it for me and the next morning the contact had fallen out so he hooked me up with the new contacts. When I installed them somehow it caused me to bend the locking lever trying to put the battery compartment. Sent it to Eotech and they fixed it all up and works great.

I don't think I'd pay new for one, but they're nice enough when used. I wouldn't worry about finding the newer style as the upgrade is a call to Eotech away.

For the $350 I can get a new one, I think it would be a decent optic, for a basic rifle.

At that price range I'd start looking for a used aimpoint PRO.

Check slick gun deals for 512s on sale. There was a sale awhile back with a rebate for $289 out the door I want to say.

However.... if I could do it all over again.. I would buy a nice 2x-6x power scope instead.
Red dots are cool.. but I enjoy time behind a low power scope a lot more these days. That's where I would spend my money.

Plus nice eotech magnification down there road (if you were planning that) is $400 if you want to upgrade.
