Hello,
I am in the process of building an AR-15 from an 80% lower. This will be my second build and with this one I want to run a scope. However , I need some advice. My upper is a JSE 20" Wilson Arms .223 Wylde with bull barrel and being a flat-top . I would like to get a Nikon P-223 3-9 x 40 BDC 600 scope. The rings I like are the Weaver 6 hole picatinny Tactical rings. The scope has a 1" tube. It looks to me that Weaver only makes them in Medium height and high.....I don't think they make low. I know that you should keep your scope as low to the barrel as possible, so would the medium height ones be ok or should I go with another brand and look for a LOW set ????? Also, if I used low ones, would that raise the scope up enough off the picatinny rail.......I never did this before, so I don't know !!!! Thanks for your help !!!! Pumpdaddy |

You will be disappointed with low or medium rings. This is not a bolt action rifle.
The stock is designed to give you proper cheek weld with the standard front sight and carry handle. As stated, you'll get best results with the centerline of the scope 1.5" above the top of your rail. You also need to think about proper scope eye relief. Typically that works out with the back of your scope eyepiece just about even with the back of your charge handle. With many scopes you will have to push the scope forward in the rings to the point thst your front ring will no longer be on the receiver top. Cantilever scope mounts like the LaRue SPR 1.5 (LT-104) or the Burris PEPR accomplish this. You can also use an extended rail riser with the rings you are considering, but then you are stacking mounts on top of mounts and increasing the chance that something will work loose. |
