I'm looking for a budget scope that I can use for 3 Gun as well as some range/hunting. I've narrowed the list down to either the Nikon P223 or the Vortex Crossfire II. Both are 3-9x40.
Any opinions either way? Something else I should be looking at? I'm intrigued by the Weaver Tactical Grand Slam at Midway USA but not sure I can justify the extra $100 Thx -K2 |

For the budget minded I recommend the Primary Arms 1-6 or the Burris MTAC 1-4. Pat |

Pat What's the (for lack of a better phrase) 'max effective distance' that 1-4 or 1-6 will provide sufficient magnification to see/engage a target? 200 yds? 400 yds? I know it's somewhat dependent on the set of Mk 1 eyeballs behind the scope. Last sighting system I used had a laser range finder, ballistic computer, and a fully stabilized 120mm smooth bore cannon...... So the setup of a smaller gun is somewhat unknown to me. Thx -K2 |

Why did OP exclude the Leupold Mark AR Mod 1? The 1.25-4x20mm version is very good and affordable. Rugged. Good glass for the price. American. Great reticle for 3G use. Don't need 6x at the ranges OP is shooting, but do need to get below 3x for CQB and 3G. Mostly becasue I was looking at scopes in the 3-9x range. I'd love a Leupold but hadn't found one that I thought met my needs (3-9x 40mm) or that I could afford. Now that the advice is to go lower in power, I'll have another look at Leupold. Thx -K2 |

This is what my reticle looked like after a few hundred rounds through my 16" 300 BLK. This happened to the first scope, Vortex replaced it. The same thing happened to the second one. Vortex replaced it. The third one is sitting on a shelf NIB. If you go Vortex, go for the higher end lines, IMHO. I also have a couple of Primary Arms scopes and have never had any issues. How old are the scopes that had the reticle problem? Any chance they've straightened out their quality problems? Thx -K2 |

Thx -K2 The first one was purchased about a year and a half ago and the last one was replaced about four months ago. I have an original Crossfire (not Crossfire II) on a 7.62X39 gun and have never had an issue. My only problem with Vortex's warranty is that there is NO opportunity to upgrade, so once you have a particular model, that's all they will replace it with unless it doesn't exist any more. |

But get the lower power one to run 3G. You'll not have to send it back and you will be paying American workers' salaries. The 1.5-4x20mm with the Firedot SPR reticle should be about $400 including free shipping, but may be a bit less with Black Friday pricing discounts or other discount coupon codes you might qualify for. |

Thx -K2 Well I can and have hit to 550 yards with mine and that is only because that is the furthest target out on the range I was at at the time. In three gun we shoot out to 600 and guys have been doing that in the past with 4x and now 6x makes it even easier. Last week I was getting my down for an upcoming three gun match near Ft. Benning and I shot my 10 inch steel plates at 400 yards with ease. I shot 2 5 shot groups. The first was 2.9 inches and the second was 2.5 inches with my JP with a 1-6 Swarovski on top. You really don't need as much magnification as you think. 1x per hundred yards is a good rule of thumb. Pat |
