Just got a ArmaLite M15 A4T upper, 20" stainless heavy match barrel, 1-8" twist etc. So far I've considered a Nikon M-223 3-12X42. I can get one from SWFA for 479.99 with their one piece mount included, I'm not crazy about the reticl. choices though. I'd like to be able to shoot 600 meters as I have that kind of distance available to shoot. I reload so I'd like to take advantage of the accuracy potential of the upper and ammo I can load. So in that price range ($500 or less) what are some good options? Doesn't have to be 3-12X, just one I've looked at so far.

I am running a Nikon Monarch, 4 - 14 x 42 on an Armalite AR 10 in .308, with a mil-dot reticle. For my target and hunting needs, I am very happy with it. Got it on sale at $160+/- from Midway iirc. I am learning and practicing wth a Mil-Dot slide rule device and the scope at various ranges. It works very well and needs no batteries. I have killed a couple of night-time hogs using a WML. For me it works great.  44-40.

If you call around you may find one of these for under $500. IMO a lot better scope than the Nikon.

Try SportOptics.com and CameralandNY first.
