Im going to get an Eotec holographic sigh and was wanting to get the 552.A65 with the Eotec magnifier. Does it matter if I get the longer Eotec sight vs the shorter versions as short as the .300 blackout? Any opinions and sugfestions appreciated. Im going to be hunting and target shooting with this rifle. Also I may take longer range shots like 300+yrds, Its a Colt LE6920MP with a 16" barrel

Nope. They just take double AA batteries which I prefer.  Using any eotech feels exactly the same. The differences are in cowitness, controls and battery type. They all do the same thing.

Between the Eotec 512.A65 and the 552.A65 what are the pros and cons? Is the 552 really worth the extra money?

For me, the difference between the 512 and 552 is the night vision.  Are you ever going to use NVGs/night vision unit on your gun.  Yes? 552.  No? 512.  Honestly most civilians will never use or need night vision on a EO Tech AR with a 16" barrel.

I figure why waste the money on the NV version. If I can afford NV down the road, buying a NV capable Eotech then should be small potatoes.

Prefered over CR123? Why? How long do AA batteries last in an Eotech?

It may not be an issue of battery life, it may be an issue of battery availability, and interchangeability with other equipment - such as raiding a flashlight for AA batteries for a 512.  Plus, the 512 can use alkaline, lithium or rechargeable batteries, in case you're scrounging through the rubble of the post-government shutdown world.

If you happen to use a CR123A in flashlights, the EXPS or the XPS would make sense.

For the 512, EOTech lists:

  • Power Source: 2x 1.5V AA batteries (supports lithium, alkaline, or rechargeable)

  • Battery Life: 1,000 continuous hours (lithium) at nominal setting 12; 600 continuous with AA alkaline

For an EXPS2, EOTech lists:

Battery Life: 600 continuous hours at nominal setting 12

Not to derail this thread, BUT

Op, how many "longer range shots like 300+yrds" do you expect to take? If the answer is more than a few, or even more than a few at 200+ yds, maybe you should think about a 1-6 ish scope instead of an eotech and magnifier. The extra magnification would definitely help hunting situations at 200+ yds where shot placement affects humanely killing the animal, but more importantly it also affects what tasty bits remain intact.
