I've got a RRA that came with no optics. Currently have an RDS mounted on top. The RDS has a QD mount. I'm thinking of getting a scope for distance shooting, (...out to 200yrds or so).
Basically I'd like to be able to switch back and forth between the two optics (depending on what I'm shooting at) and don't have the room for both on the rail. Here's the question: Should the sights keep zero if you take them off to swap them back & forth? I understand I'd need to be careful about them getting knocked around. They'd be kept in a foam filled Pelican box when not in use. I'm hoping that as long as I put either optic back in the same place on the rail it came off of, I'll be ok. I don't care for the off set mounts available to mount both a scope & RDS at the same time. It just looks a little weird & the RDS is too big to be hanging off to the side. I've also considered the Burris mounts that would allow me to mount the RDS on top of the scope. But I think it would just be too tall. Thoughts, comments & criticisms welcome! |

It depends on the quality of the mount, but yes, good reputable QD mounts should return to zero (or close), if you do your part to be consistent.
It helps to mount things as far forward in their slot as possible, so that things dont shift under recoil. Some designs and manufacturers are probably a little more repeatable than others.... |

What you want to do is probably what most folks end up doing with their ARs that run optics. Larue is proven across the board from competitors to world-wide military usage. Their repeatability is the standard to meet in the industry. Another player with excellent results is ADM. Both are US made, solid in design and near in price. On top of all that, Larue has a board here in the industry forums. Check it out for detailed info, reviews and pics. ADM product info can be found by searching theoptics board too.
Remember the caveat, "Buy cheap, buy twice". |
