| So I just got back from a 3 Gun Nation match (my first) and I noted some things, one of which is I could use a dedicated scope for this game. What scope(s) are people using for this? I DO have a budget, so Nightforce/US Optic is not on the table. Go. |

At $500 I'd take the PST. At $1000 I'd take the SWFA SS 1-6x or the 1-4x($800). That sounds good. I have the xtr14 for my $400 scope and got the ss1-6 for $700. The dials are better on the ss. Ffp but I don't think its really necessary on a scope like this (nice though). Reticle better (thanks in part to ffp) on ss. Illumination control better on ss (clicks with every other off). Glass seems equal and eyebox/fov better on xtr (maybe in part due to ffp?) so I believe the ss was worth extra but many could be just as happy with xtr. Yes, I did get the xtr used/like new for a good deal and the ss new but the facecrack deal lowered that price as well so still relative to percent increase in $. |

I agree FFP is not really needed on a 1-6x. For me its usually on 1 or 6. I like the illuminated circle and cross hairs at 1x for CQB shit and on 6x the circle disappears leaving you with a nice ranging reticle. I've used this scope out to a little over 400 yds and it works really well. Sometime this fall I'll be able to take it out to 600 or more. My only complaints on this scope are, they should have made the circle disappear a little further at 6x. The circle will bleed out a little using illumination. Not really a huge deal since my lowlight shooting is pretty much always at 1x. Not really a complaint but this scope is not light. The SS HD's are pretty freakin stout. |

Agreed. They should have also made it 1/2 the thickness as well which may have solved the illumination bleeding at 6x. I don't mind the weight at all since it is on a fairly heavy AR anyway.
Don't mean to stray from topic so my point is that I believe, as with most things, in the rule of diminishing returns with optics. Burris, vortex, weaver offer some good stuff around $400 and small improvements from there will cost $$$. Where you stop moving up depends on your situation and all the reviews can't speak to that. Btw, I love Aimpoints. Have fun shopping. |

I just picked up a Leupold Mark AR MOD -1 with Firedot SPR reticle (1.5 - 4 power) brand new for $350.
I have it mounted in a Larue SPR-E mount and it works great. The illuminated green dot it quick to pick up and the 4x power helps for a little extra help at distance. The crosshair is a little thicker than I expected as it completely covered a 2" diamond at 100yds while I was sighting it in. But for most applications it should work well. It is a MIL/MIL scope and has a BDC for 55gr 5.56 rounds. I haven't got a chance to play with the BDC to see how well it works, but I hope to soon. |

I placed 7th at the MGM Ironman, and 10th at USPSA nationals using a Burris Tac 30 1-4. Never turned the illumination on and zeroed that giant center dot for 300 yards. You do have to use hold unders with a 300 yd zero, but it has a nice T that I used as a reference point for the smaller plate racks at 100. You can also use the edge of the dot as reference points. The outer circle or 500 yd drop is perfect at 5 yards if you a a real tight shot.
If you are on a budget the Burris works just fine. Spend the savings on practice ammo. ETA, only reason I included my place finishes is because its the Internet and you don't know people's background. The Burris is the only 1-4 I've used, I did buy the vortex 1-6 recently but haven't used in competition yet. |
