| Decided to finally get one but what's the best or most practical mount in your opinion? |
| That was not what I meant, I understand you want a red dot. I have several of these and they are great...The Aimpoint Pro comes with a mount already. Just mount it on your rail. You can buy BUIS that are cantilever at 30-45degrees I believe...Did you not know the Aimpoint Pro comes already with a mount?? |

the op has simply stated that he wishes to buy an aimpoint...he doesnt already have one, and isnt looking to swap out the qpr2 mount from an aimpoint he already has... you can buy aimpoints with the qpr2 mount or with a different mount already on it (from larue for instance).
OP, an aimpoint pro from any dealer will come with a mount (the qpr2 from aimpoint). I never used mine, so i dont know if it's RTZ and google opinions seem to vary between yes and no. as far as cowitness goes, its neither absolute or 1/3, somewhere in the middle. the upside to this is it will be the cheapest. you can get a PRO for under 400 bucks mount included. the biggest problems iwth the QPR2 mount are you wont be able to comfortably get a magnifier behind the aimpoint if you choose to buy one (without having part of the mount off the receiver), and the giant knob on the left side likes to dig into your chest while the rifle is slung (asusming you are a right handed shooter). a cantavalier mount will be a loewr 1/3 cowitness, but the real benefit is that it mounts the aimpoint further forward while still staying on the upper receiver. this lets you get a magnifier and BUIS behind the aimpoint without anything leaving the upper receiver. the normal mounts will remove the knob and give you the option for true absolute or lower third cowitness, but will still have the same issue of no room for BUIS and magnifier. lower 1/3 vs absolute is how high the dot sits. absolute lines up perfectly with your iron sights. lower 1/3 raises the dot slightly above the level of your iron sights. lower 1/3 allows you to run fixed iron sights without the irons interfering with your red dot (and you can also hold your head a little higher). FWIW, i use ADM cantavalier mounts (i do run magnifiers). larue's are good, but ADM is IMO just as good but cheaper. both are RTZ (return to zero). bobro mounts are by far the best of the three of these, but more expensive. |

To answer you question about all the options. On the LaRue web site there are only really two mount upgrades for you to consider. The RAS II mount is too short for a standard AR. The Lt150 is a straight mount. The LT129 is a cantilever mount that moves the red dot forward. As has been posted this will give you enough room to add a magnifier later if you want and still have everything fit on the receiver rail. They offer either in QD or non QD. IMHO if you go with a LaRue mount get the QD. They make one of the best.
There is some confusing info in this thread about cowitness. This video might help if it is not clear. LINK |
