Anywhere from the bushnell 25 to the aimpoint pro in video reviews I see a clearly defined dot, in person they are very blurred.  Does one have to go for more expensive sights to accquire a more defined dot, or does it not exist?

cool i get to be the bearer of bad news.  you likely have astigmatism in one or both of your eyes.  its not a big deal though, and its often so faint most people dont even know they have it.  i have astigmatism in my shooting eye, my aimpoint is a smeared comet thorugh my right eye, but a crisp dot on the left eye.  if i close my left eye and look around with my right eye, i can tell my vision in that eye isnt perfect even though i can see 20/20 in that eye (hard to explain).

only 3 things you can do about it.  i believe you can get special glasses/contacts (shooting glasses even) that can help correct astigmatism.  or you can try looking through an eotech, the eotech is much more clear to me (holographic image vs. led).  or you can just deal with a non perfect dot like i do.

There are other options: Any optic w/an adjustable focus should make the reticle clear for you (like a 1-4x variable or the Leupold 1x Prismatic) or a Reflex-style optic like the Meprolight M21 ( http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_3_18/590436_Meprolight_M21_RevM__anyone_have_the_new_one_.html ).
I have astigmatism as well w/both Eotech & Aimpoint reticles looking distorted. However, the M21's reticles I've tried so far (bullseye & triangle) appear sharp & crisp to me.

I have an astigmatism in both eyes not to mention I had LASIK done last year which creates a halo effect with lights.. I found that if you move your optic as far forward (away from your eye) as possible, the red dot gets more defined and less blurry. I use the Vortex Strikefire BTW...
