I've got it narrowed to 3. Now , the 3 I think I've gotten to ar the NightForce NSX 1-4, the Vortex PST 1-4 and the Leupold VX-R patrol 1-4. I probably will never shoot much over 2-300 yards so I think the 1-4 is what I'm looking for so, I can use it close up and out to 2-300 yards. I have Eotech's and Aimpoints but want more magnification.
Is the NightForce really that much better? I'm not one to baby anything so I want one that I don't have to worry about bumping around and defenatly want something I can rely on no mater what happens. Is it go big or go home with the NightForce or is one of these less expensive options good enough. I want to be able to trust my life on this so be honest.

You don't have to spend a ton of money on a reliable scope;  having a reticle that can range a target fast and provide ballistic hold over without fiddling with the elevation turret is what is going to save your bacon in a 1-4x situation.  My vote goes to the Hi-Lux Leatherwood CMR or CMR2.

I've got the Leupold VX-R Patrol SPR illuminated, 1.25-4X and really like it for the distances  you are talking about.  It's light weight (11.5 oz) have it mounted with a LaRue LT 104 QD, works great, simple reticle and not a whole lot of money. Good Luck with your decision.

Really? Of the 3 I listed y'all are saying go with a CMR? I don't think it's on par with any of the 3 I listed. I'm not saying its not a good budget optic, just not the quality of any that where in my final 3.

So, no advise?

No way I'd buy the CMR over the others. Get the PST if you want the best value or the NF if you want bomb proof.

I agree, I had a CMR, and it was a decent scope.  The Eye box wasn't near as large as some others I've used.  The knobs are so large, and easy to move that they were always be a few clicks from where I set them after slinging the rifle.  It is also heavy, and the glass was good for the price, but nothing compared to what you are considering.

I miss the mount more than the scope.

I doubt many would argue that a 1-4X magnification is not a good choice for an AR with targets in the 5 to 500 yards range.

I think where we see many more opinions; is on reticle selection.  In my opinion the Trijicon horseshoe or chevron reticle with BDC and ranging is the way to go for a 1-4X situation.  At 1X power you focus more on the horseshoe/dot or chevron (similar to aimpoint/eotech) and at 4X power the BDC and ranging can be used.  This type reticle allows for the fastest possible firing solution to be obtained an any target within 5-500 yards.

I have a fixed 10x with mil-dots; it's a one pony show.  I'm not going to be clearing houses or getting into a firefight with it anytime soon.  Sure; I can go to the range and shoot paper targets at close range with it; but they are not shooting back.  When you get into variable scopes; the options become numerous and you have to start asking a lot of questions about situations the reticle needs to perform in.  In the end; you are going to have some compromises.  For me; the  Trijicon horseshoe or chevron reticle with BDC and ranging answers these questions.

A Trijicon with those recitical chooses is not available in 1-4 they are fixed 4 power optics.  While I would like one IF it was 1-4, I am looking specifically for something that has a true 1 power or in the VX-R patrol 1.5 power

How about 1-6X.  The VCOG is coming out later this year in the fall.  It has a segmented circle w/BDC or horseshoe dot w/bdc.

The VCOGwould be nice but its outside my price range

When I said Hi-Lux CMR/CMR2 earlier; I meant CMR4.  Leupold has a CMR2.

The Hi-Lux CMR4 is supposed to be an improved version of the CMR and sell for around $500.

Leupold 1.5-5x20 Mark 4 MR/T 30mm Riflescope has what they call a CMR2 reticle that is a horseshoe dot.  It's around $1000.

What the price on the VCOG? Will it be available in mils as well as moa? I wish the optic industry would pick one system and stick with it. Is it .25 or .36 or .5 or .72 a click.... I'm loosing it....

Primary Arms has them listed at $2270.00 but they have not been released yet.

The Trijicon accupoint is also a consideration. I can get a really good deal on one right now. I just don't know about the triangle post.
