I have a DPMS Recon 308 coming in the mail early next week. I've been searching for a scope to put on it for application of white tail deer hunting from 25 to 250 yards. My deer lease does not have any longer application but I do want to try longer ranges at the gun range. So, that's my application.
which PST? I have 1500 budgeted for two AR, the recon and I have a daniel defense AR15 which I plan on putting on something quick for hitting ferrel hogs. About 500 bucks give or take for that rifle....I'm open to opinions on that application as well. Usually 25 to 75 yards shots on those pigs. So for the money (around a thousand budgeted), I want to ask about the PST line. If you haven't used one, please don't comment. I think that's a valid request because if you haven't owned one, then it's speculation. I've narrowed it down to the 40, 50 mm optics and the 44. Buddy of mine seems to think a 50 mm optic is too heavy for hunting and sits too high on the AR. it's around 22 ounces. What will fit the AR10 nicely? Benefit my application. I thought about the 6-24 but I've never owned a scope beyond a 10 power variable. I've read nothing but good to great reviews on the Vortex line. My comparison or other thoughts of purchase is the Leopold VX-R line. Thanks for helping out! |

I have a 1-4 PST so I guess I qualify.
More importantly I deer hunt with a 12lb Rem 700. My scope weighs 24 oz. My style of hunting does not factor in to the weight of my rifle. I am not hiking up and down mountains all day. I walk a relatively short distance to a stand and sit there for a few hours. I don't care what my gun weighs. The extra few oz. my scope weighs over a standard 3-9x40 hunting scope is a non issue. So your hunting style should dictate your needs. Having said that, I would go with the 2.5-10x44 or the 4-16x50. I think the 6-24x50 is too much low end power for hunting. Yes it can be done with 6x but I would rather have 3x or 4x on the low end. On an AR the 50mm Obj is a non issue as well. Most AR mount get it up higher than it needs to be for clearance issues. They are usually around 1.4"-1.5" inches above the rail. There are other options if you like it lower on the gun. I have mounted a 50mm on an AR with a weaver tac riser and mk 4 rings and it was 1.315 above the rail. The PST scopes are awesome for the money. I would put a 1-4 on your hog gun and one of the other two I mentioned on the AR10. I personally dont care for the turrets on the VXR Patrol line. I have a MkAR Mod 1 (which has the same turrets) and they in no way even compare to the turrets on the PST. Hope this helps. Good luck. |

Aim point on the hog gun , 2.5x10 on the .308
ETA: I own a PST 1x4, HD 1x6, FFP 6x24, and used to own a 4x16. I love the PST line and consider them a great value w/ excellent, no questions asked, customer service.(never had to use the CS, just going off what everyone else says) ETA2: if you were to be strictly hunting w/ it, I say 2.5x10. But if you're going to be shooting farther often, go w/ the 4x16. The 4x16 is still OK to hunt w/. |
| I ordered the 4-16 50mm for my 308 and 1-4 24 mm for my 223. I also purchased two of the vortex quick release mounts to try them on each gun. I'll let you guys know how they feel. I've watched a few videos on these and read lots of reviews on the PST line. Customer service has me sold and the fact that if I break something, it's replaced. I'd say I'm 80 percent hunter and 20 range shooter. I'd probably shoot the 308 more at the range and 223 for hogs. Looking forward to trying them out. First 50 mm optic for me |
