Hey guys,
I'm new to the AR community and was hoping to get some insight on a scope. I've been using iron sights for most of my life (not at a long distance) but recently, I have been having trouble with coyotes on my ranch. I have never really used a scoped rifle other than the one my neighbor has but he spent upwards of 2,000$ on his. I'm looking to spend anywhere from $500-$1000 and will be taking most of my shots with a 5.56 round at 500 to 600 yards. I would also like to take input building my AR to be a 7.62 round (will this be more practical for distance for the extra $$)? Any input would be much appreciated. Thank you! |

Vortex Viper PST Series is a PHENOMINAL Value for the money. . . . It will work will with your 5.56 or 7.62x51 if you decide to convert.
VORTEX OPTICS |
| I hunt coyotes with a variety of rifles . the most useful scopes are 2x7 , 3x9 , or 3x10 . I would look at something like a leupold 3x9 patrol rifle optic or midway sells an exclusive weaver 3x10x40 mildot scope that is an excellent buy , you get a lot of scope for the money . I have a howa varmint supreme that has a 6x18 nikon with side focus and while it seems like a good idea coyotes dont hold still very long and trying to focuse the scope and stay on target is not as easy as a person would think . my favorite rifle to use is my colt 6940 carbine with a trijicon 4x acog . at 200 yds I can hit the kill zone no problem there is nothing to turn or dial in and it works well when a dog shows up at 25 yds instead of 250 yds. to be honest unless you find a coyote laying on the hill side at 500 yds I seriously doubt a shot on a moving dog would successful very often . I personally prefer a 200 yds zero . that keeps you pretty well on target with out having to hold over out to 250 yds. to answer your question about effectiveness of the 5.56 compared to a 308 at 500 yds the 5.56 is pretty anemic but still deadly with a clean hit. |

Leupold VX-R 3-9x German #4
Light, affordable (money left over for a good mount like an LT-104), illuminated, 3-9x, fast reticle. Good for 25-220y. Beyond that an you'll want a ballistic reticle and/or more magnification. Or take a step up to a Vortex 2.5-10x32... |
