If and when i ever sell my xps 3-4 eotech I want to get either a Vortex Viper Pst 1-4 OR a Leupold VXR 1-4.  As far as price goes they are within $100 of each other.  I have a PST 6-24 on another rifle and I love it.  So first hand I know the vortex is a quality piece and there is no questioning the quality of the Leuppy.  But I'm looking for first hand experiance with both optics for a recomendation.

This optic is going on my 18" rock river upper. But that shouldn't make a difference since they both have the same magnification, eye relief, etc. I'm just looking for the best piece of glass in the 1-4x area of magnification and still be under $600+ mount.  If I'm forgetting another piece in this catagory let me know.  I do know I don't want over 6x, so i might consider something in the 1.5-6x range but I'd rather stay in the 1-4x range

Thanks for the reviews, recomendations and input.

Those are both the best of the budget 1-4x scopes you can get right now.  I like the illumination on the Leupold better, but like the over all scope on the PST better.  The I like the PST, just watch the turrets and make sure you don't bump them, I've been at 3-gun and precision matches where people bumped their PST knobs and accidentally dialed a few clicks in.  The PST and Leupold are both great for the money and in that price range I don't think they can be beat.  The next cheapest scope I usually recommend is the Leupold VX-6 multigun which is a lot more money.

The leupold illumination is daylight visible and easy to pick up quickly in the brightest sunlight, plus the inertia switch keeps batteries fresh, yet the gun is instantly ready, no need to turn it on.

They are. And Leupold optics are "assembled" in the US, not made

Not necessarily True.  Yes they have some products that they brand, but the scopes are manufacturered at their facility in Beaverton Oregon.  I've toured the plant twice and saw the rows of lathes spitting out scope bodies.  I saw the technicians building duplex reticles.  The only major component they didn't make in-house was the glass.

Here to chime in for Vortex. Warranty and the scopes are exceptional!

When a great warranty is a major plus for a product, that tells me something. I'd rather have a product that has a great warranty but its rarely mentioned.

I guess it does mean something. We believe in our product so much that if it fails at all send it to us and we will give you a new one, no questions asked. No receipt, no warranty card. Don't matter. Neither of my Vortex scopes have failed.

That might be where they are based but not where they are made.
My Viper PST was made in the Philippines, just like my whore of an ex-wife, lol.  Great scope though.

That's the same as Vortex. Both are US companies, one farms out production both farm out glass production like every other optics maker. Both have similar warranties but the Vortex is a little better. Also, in my experience Vortex customer service is second to none.

Both are execellent companies!  Both have product lines that appeal to different folks. There is something for everyone from both. I have bought from both. Vortex is a sight sponsor.

Hurricane Ike demolished the town I lived in in 2008. My gun safe was washed into a boat slip where it sat submerged for 6 days in salty silty water.
The only scope that survived was a Leupold. Still crystal clear and shots like a champ.

Like i said i already have a bigger PST and i love it.

This throws a little kink into the works.  I just saw that leupold makes a 2-7x version of the VXR  This might actually make a better choice for me. If i only need 1x then i'll be using iron sights anyway. so starting off at a 2x might be the better option. But 7x is alot of magnification for this rifle, i'm just sure if i need it

I don't see how 7x could ever be thought of as too much magnification on an 18" AR15.

2.5-8x36 and 3.5-10x40 Mark 4 Leupold scopes are plenty prevalent on rifles like this.

I know that Vortex is made in WI.  I do not know about Leupold.

UPDATE:  From the Vortex website:  "All of our products are designed to our own specifications and inspected and serviced at our modern facility located in central Wisconsin."    Does not say MANUFACTURED in Wisconsin.  Disappointed.

Not sure why people think Leupold's warranty is not as good as others... I bought a Mark 4 LR/T second hand that looked like it came right out of Iraq, sent it in just to have it checked/ re calibrated and the only thing I paid for was shipping and a few buck to replace the front bell housing that was chipped( scope had been dropped and bumped several times from the dings I found after stripping the desert camo paint job off it). They changed my turrets, bell house, and sent back the scope no questions asked.

I chose between these two and went with the Leupold purely because I preferred the SPR Firedot reticle. Both are excellent scopes.

So another criteria for me is focal plane. I'm used to first focal plane and mil-mil turrets and reticles. Just to keep it simple I would like to stick with the same. Does this mean I'm answering my own questions and am leaning toward the pst?  I don't believe the leuppy has a ffp option.

The PST is SPF only also. You'll want to look at other brands for FFP as Vortex and Leupold both do not make those in FFP.

Leupold makes a 1-6x FFP, but it's 4 times the price of the PST or VX-R. The cheapest FFP 1-4x is the SWFA SS 1-4x20
2/19/2013 2:40:54 PM EDT
[#24]
Also, in my opinion FFP 1-4x scopes are entirely reticule dependent. Some reticules like the SS 1-4x are nice and work well. Most, in my opinion, are too small and unusuable at 1x to be worth a damn. I've never ranged a target with a 4x scope nor would I try. A variable 1-4x should be fast on 1x and on 4x. (To me anyway)

Both the PST and VX-R have good reticules for their purpose, good glass dollar for dollar, good adjustments etc. I like the reticule and illumination in the VX-R better. The PST has better adjustments if you plan to dial. Both are great.

Thank you very much on that info. I guess I may have to get used to sfp

I started looking at the vxr patrol 3-9x with firedot tmr reticle. It doesn't apear to be overly cluttered. Good illumination. And with american defense qd mount and shipping for under $700. I don't think I could go wrong.

I have both a Vortex (Viper PST 4-16x50 w/FFP) and a Leupold 2.5-10x40 (had it about 10 yrs which cost $800 at the time) and the Vortex is definitely more bang for the buck. I'm happy with both of them.

Most of the Vortex Scopes are made in Japan.   Vortex is an American Co.  the major part of the Dollars stay in the US.    Unlike something Like Toyota that the big dollars leave the US and go to Japan.

I don't have 1-4 PST   I use mostly the Razor Line of scopes and optics.   I can tell you that plenty of shooters let me know how happy they are with their Vortex scopes.
And I get some that are not happy I tell them to send it back and Vortex will make it rite.
I only have one friend that was not happy with a Sparc blinking off, and he would not send it back to Vortex.  Even after I told him Vortex would send him a prpaid shipping labble since he had sent it back once allready.

Leupold is a great Co   And I still have a few older Leupold scopes , But I would never loan out a Leupold for fear of it being damaged and not repairable.   I do loan out my  Vortex Scopes with no fear at all.

I talked to my local dealer and I am now on the first arival wait list for the pst i linked to above. He said they are expected in april and I get 1 from the first shipment.

This also gives me time to research the best mount.

So anyway about mounts. I'm joking

Thanks guys

I think you made a great choice.  I will be getting that optic for a 16" .308 Mega build I have started.

As for mounts, well that's a whole other can of worms.  Lots of choices, and lots of price differences.  A site sponsor here is LaRue Tactical, and typically people suggest them here.  I have used their mounts with good success in the past.  I'd also recommend Bobro as I am really impressed with their stuff.  ADM would also be in the running.  Aadland, GDi, Sphur and even the new Weaver mounts should all be looked at.  Good luck, you have good taste so far.
