So,
I'm sure it's somewhere on here already but couldn't find it... Want a new scope for an ar. Rifle specs... 22" heavy barrel in 5.56 Free float tube Lo pro gas block Exo fail zero bcg and hammer Bipod on the free Floyd tube Magpul prs It's currently sporting a ta31f right now Looking for a bit more magnification. Shooting 200-500 meters. This weapon is for medium to long range. I have plenty of acogs on carbines and such. Love the acogs...but for distance it comes up short. And I'm not getting not my 40's so that's not an issue yet. Been looking around a bit. Not sure if a trijicon TARS is in my budget...but if it's really that good...I'm sure I can make it work... I'm not a huge scope guy...only have like 6 weapons with scopes...all deer and/or big game rifles. Ex. 7400 in 30-06. 7mm mag and .243 all for deer etc. Thanks Bret P.S. I'm open to any advise on this subject...seriously... Also this weapon is now at this point tested and found reliable...I've run about 2-3 k through it and no failures of any kind in the last couple thousand...since a buffer change. |

Variable or fixed?
Magnification range? Budget? If variable, FFP (first focal plane) is the way to go, albeit more expensive. Magnification range is something you'll need to decide on. I have a 6-24 on my bolt action, but I'm tentatively planning on a 4-16 on my 20" AR build. 2.5-10s are even smaller. Budget - only you'll know. Factor in $200 for a LaRue LT-104 or LT-158. |

Ok,
Variable for sure...thinking higher on range...I have 4x right now...so like 16-24x on the high end. Budget, well I like to keep the dollars out of the equation... Forget price...find the best then justify the expense... Bret p.s. don't know much about those mounts...school me :) |
|
The Larue mounts are going to be the best scope mounts in the business. They keep the scope at the proper height for an AR rifle and have quick release levers that allow the scope to be removed from the rifle and if placed back on the rifle in the same spot the scope will retain zero.
There are so many scopes that meet your specifications of 16-24x on the high end with no price factor that it is hard to make a suggestion. I'm just running a 3-10x40 mildot reticle/turrets weaver scope from midway on my 18" AR right now but I like it...especially for around $300-400. |

Might as well spring for a spuhr mount as well. Schmidt&Bender would be my second choice. |

If you're a SWAT sniper, spending $3500 on a Schmidt & Bender could be perfectly reasonable. If you do lots of competitions, the same might be true. If you just love shooting and you want really nice equipment, spending around $1000 probably makes more sense. Without giving us some sort of meaningful budget to work with, we're all just going to recommend our favorite scopes. So in that case, I'll just say to go with a Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP Mrad. Everything about the scope is perfect in my opinion. It wouldn't matter if I was custom ordering a high end scope...I can't think of a single thing I would do differently. It's what I have on my bolt action .308, and I'd like either another 6-24 or a 4-16 to put on my work-in-progress precision AR15. LaRue mounts are awesome. They put the scope at the proper height for an AR15, they cantilever the scope out over the handguard so you can get appropriate eye relief without putting one scope ring on the receiver and one ring on the handguard, they have QD mounts so you can take your scope off and switch to irons or another optic, and they return to zero when you put them back on. They're a little pricey because they're worth it. |

The illuminated version has a daylight visible reticle that works well at lower magnifications using the Bindon Aiming Concept that works so well with the Trijicons you are accustomed to. Has 18x at the high end to do anything you and your rifle can do. Nothing else out there for under $2500 even comes close. At $1200, it cannot be beaten. |

ok,
Budget...Hmmmm... Well lets say that is the last item in my list... I'm not working with this weapon...I'm not planning on any competition... I have a 300 Meter range at my house... This was build as a precision AR... So I'm not worried about the price...1-2 K is well within the budget... Even more if there is an advantage... So, I'm going to take a look at the ones listed so far... Thanks Bret |

Well,
I ordered a LT-104 and a Vortex Viper PST 6-24... I'll try this combo out...Wasn't that much money and seems to be rated well... I'm still interested in any comments too... I'm going to be building a few more ar's in Janurary...Have enough parts in stock at my place to build them... Thanks Bret |

My FFP Mrad took something like 8 months to get if I remember right. I do know it took longer than my silencer. |

well, maybe I'm lucky... Delivery estimate: Jan. 2, 2013 - Jan. 7, 2013 1"Vortex Viper PST 6-24x50 FFP Riflescope with EBR-1 MRAD PST-624F1-M" Misc.; $949.99 In Stock Off Amazon... I'm waiting to try it out... Bret Wicked, that's the best model of the PST. I had to wait so long for mine because the place I ordered from offered a nice discount on it...the downside was that it took forever so I missed a hunting season. Worth it in the long run to save some cash, but I think you've done well. |

yea, it isn't very practical to use if you are doing any quick shots or running and gunning. It's nice to dial in perfect and shoot for groups though. That's what i figured... I'm an OK shot...Nothing great...But I may try one of those for shooting paper... My range at home is 500M to my farthest backstop... I might need to extend that :) Bret |

Another question just popped in my head... what sorta killflash are available for this scope... I have them on most of my acogs. Bret Shouldn't need a killflash unless the deer start shooting back. |

Shouldn't need a killflash unless the deer start shooting back. Well, You know those deer are getting smart nowadays :) I ordered a size 7 ARD from optics planet already. You never know when you going to be on a two way range. Also my scope already shipped... awesome.... And many of my other toys are starting to trickle in... I'm in addition to building a few ar's decking out my vault with new stuff as well... Thanks for all the help! Bret P.S. Now I've got to get used to the scope...I haven't shot a non acog since like 2006 or so... It will be fun! |

Nice! This weapon is ALL black... Also what is the model of mono-pod on your prs? Bret Okay...Bad cell phone pic...Don't even know where my camera is...I'll blame it on the kid...Well probably not! http://www.brethedrington.com/ar.JPG But this is going to be sporting a nice new scope very soon... I just noticed that the sights on this gun are all jacked up. Both of the BUIS are facing the wrong direction, and the rear one is supposed to go behind your ACOG, not in front of it. |
