How does one tell which generation an Elcan Specter is (without the box)? Thanks.

It's really hard to tell, as there have been so many changes to the optic.  Such as the illumination knobs or the main housing.  Generally, the rounder the housing the more recent generation it is.  Your best bet is to get in contact with someone who knows them well.

This is the most recent rendition we carry.

Good pictorial here:

http://forum.lwrci.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4345&start=75

But basically:

The original Gen 1 is the one that many people have complained about, and is not necessarily the most refined as a combat optic.

As you can see in the photos, the ARMS levers and the throw lever were on the same side, and the reticule adjust and battery compartment were the "traditional" ELCAN truncated cone design that was on the M145 MGO, hard to grip and adjust.

Also, the throw lever was (IIRC) not spring loaded, and did not have positive selector stops.

Many early users of the Gen 1 experienced many problems, as the throw lever design allowed the throw lever to be incompletely shifted, causing large POI shift as the prism would not be locked in proper alignment, exacerbated by the ARMS levers, making it very crowded on the left side.

The Gen 2 improved the design as well as streamlining the housing by installing changing the throw lever design, and making it much harder to improperly seat the throw lever with addition of the spring loaded "stops" that lock it in 1x or 4x.

The battery cover/reticule adjustment was re-designed, and the ARMS levers moved to the right side of the optic.

The Gen 3 was the same as the Gen 2, but again streamlined the housing to what CSTactical posted, more rounded, particularly around the prism housing/adjustment lever area.

The Gen 3 HDs use the same housing, but some of the internals have been revised for more survivability with the MK 17 MOD 0 SCAR-H, as something about the recoil of the MK 17 was killing the SU-230s and SU-230As mounted on them.

Thanks Augee. I just received my Elcan today from another user here on Ar15.com. The thing is sweet, built like a tank on my first impressions.

I may have asked this in another thread, but is it possible to range estimate with the SU-230 reticle? I know the civilian version has a range chart left of the main reticle. Just curious thanks. Can't wait to zero it and send some rounds downrange.
