Is there any reason to choose fixed sights over folding sights, other than the price advantage? I'm finishing my first build and I'm going to be using iron sights only for a while, then I'll buy an optic later on.

With a fixed rear sight, like this one:

You wouldn't waste any time "flipping" the rear sight up if the optic failed for whatever reason.

Also, with a 1/3 co-witness you don't ever really notice it.

Fixed sights are more durable by design.
The folders are simply to keep them out of your vision when using optics.
Depending on the optic and your skill, fixed sights can be used with red dot sights.

One of the great things about optics is that you can see below your point of aim. It's better for target identification, environment observation, and even bullet drop compensation.

The way I see it, the AR15 front sight base is a tall fat woman getting in the way of the object you actually want to put it in.

If I'm eventually going to get an optic, should I just get folding sights then? Or is it common to buy a fixed front and a folding rear?

short answer: yes.

the nature of this beast is it is infinitely customizable, and everyone likes something different.  some folks like fixed front and rear, others like fixed front and folding rear, others like both folding.  There are pros and cons to each (folding take time to deploy, fixed partially obstruct your sight lines) and you are going to have to figure out what you like.  try someone else's rifle if you can, or buy what you think you may like.  If you change your mind, there is always the equipment exchange!

Good to know, thanks.

I will say this.
When I was on the E.R.T. I used an Eotech and had a fixed front sight.
I just couldn't get used to the FSB being in my line of sight. I learned to "look through it".
I replaced it with a folding sight and for me, it was much, much better for quick target aquisition.

I run the DD A1.5 fixed sights front and rear with a Aimpoint PRO in a LT 150 mount... It makes the fixed sights lower 1/3rd and out of the way.
