I'm looking to get into a budget conscious long range scope and am considering one of the following:   Primary arms 4-14 x44 or the Millett TRS-1 4-16 x50.  I can get a great deal on the Millett but if the PA is of comparable quality, it'll be less expensive.

Any opinions on these two options??  Are they a bit over kill??  I'll be pushing my new rifle to 700-800 yards so I'll need some power, but 14 might be a bit long.  I'd also prefer not to turn my AR into a boat anchor if it can be avoided.

Are they any other options I should consider, for say $200 or less??

Thanks everyone!!  I'm new to the forum and have been gathering a wealth of information!!

14x is not overkill for 700+ yards.

I have always heard good things about Primary Arms.

long range is an area where budget and performance do not necessarily mingle.  What's the most you are willing to spend?  I know you said 200 but is there room north of that?

I use an old  4-16x  for long range shooting out to 700+yrds (780 is max target on my "Local" long range, but that is a single target out in the trees past the cleared area ).
I use the same sight on 12-14x for target shooting on shorter distances as well, all the way down to 25-50yrd but only for pure target shooting as locating the target with that much magnification is rather slow for me.
I love seeing my hits well, when target shooting , so I pretty much never use the scope on less than 10x.
It's kind of big and heavy on the gun though so I only use it on a bipod

I have an Aimpoint pro as well, with both sights on QD mounts so I can use whichever based on the type of shooting I'll do.
I always put the Aimpoint  back on when the rifle is home.

I have played with the thought of a 1-4x or 1-6x but never bit the bullet. I might get a cheap one and put it on my .22LR upper.

Yes. You should consider spending more than $200. At least another $100 would get you into a good scope. Check out the Weaver Grand Slam Tac 3-10x40 from Midwayusa.

You don't need a ton of magnification. Glass quality and TRACKING are way more important in LR shooting.

Thanks for the input everyone.  I do appreciate the insight.

First, the budget is the budget.  The TRS-1 I mentioned retails for well over my budget but I'd be able to get a steal on it.  So that's the only one over $200 in consideration.  Also, the weaver does not have an illum. reticle, which is on my list of features I'd like to have.

Additionally, I'll likely be putting a red dot at 1 o'clock for close in stuff if that matters any to suggestions.
