Looking for a variable to put on a 18" 5.56, low power, but I'd like more than 4X on the top end, would prefer to keep it under/around $400.
Will primarily be used on static targets at the range out to possibly 600yds, but most often inside 200, would prefer a fine reticle. Will also likely see some time in the woods or fields for varmints and/or deer, so needs to be good in lowlight.

What I've found so far that caught my interest: Leupold VX-R 2-7, Vortex Viper HS 2.5-10, Weaver Super Slam 1.5-6, and Burris MTAC 1.5-6, I don't think I'd like the MTAC reticle though.

Any reccomendations for other optics? or Any experince with the listed optics?

TIA

Yeah by low-powered I mean around ten or less on top.

The Weaver's not bad looking, would prefer a little more FOV, which means lower bottom end power.

Nobody has any experience with the listed optics or something similar? Dang

Check with Mueller Optics, they may have something in their Tactical lineup. Also Weaver Classic V9 is a great 3-9 power scope. Burris FullfieldII in 3-9x40 is great(I have 2 of them), Redfield Revolution in 2-7x32 or 3-9x40 are very decent scopes. All these scopes I listed are $250 and less. Mueller scopes are Illuminated Recticles for low light conditions when needed. Burris FullfieldII 3-9x40 scope is a hunting recticle(I think called 30-30) with yardage markings. Nikon scopes are also very good scopes and a lot of them have yardage markings, but also in a hunter type recticle. The only scope I know that has a fine reticle is a Weaver Classic V16(4-16x42A/O) for around $300. I have this scope mounted on a Weatherby 243Win and it's a great scope.

Picked the Weaver Super Slam Euro 1.5-6. Natchez has them pretty cheap, and a rebate. Should have it this weekend, hopefully it does what I ask.

There are a ton of 3-9 choices, and you don't really say if you want illumination or not.  If you stay under 3-9 but greater than 4 on the top end, the field shrinks a great deal.  I just got finished going through this search, and I'm completely OCD when it comes to researching a purchase.  So most of these recommendations are not from hands-on experience, but they do come from multiple, reliable opinions and reviews.

Weaver Super Slam 1-5
Nikon Monarch 2-8 (killer deal at SWFA, probably the best value)
Vortex Viper 2-7, if you can still find one somewhere online; it's discontinued.
Various Leupold VX-3s, but they'll be at the top end of your $400
Weaver Super Slam 1.5-6.  Illuminated, and someone just sold one on the EE because he was unhappy with it.  What I've read is great glass, but the dot is too big and the illumination blooms.  It's a FFP.

I ended up with a Weaver Classic Extreme 1.5-4.5, but I'm only interested in 100 yd hunting ranges; beyond that it will be paper (or coyotes) so I'm not as concerned with magnification for bullet placement.  I chose it because I just wanted to try an illuminated dot; I probably would have gotten the Monarch otherwise.  I'll post some opinions on it when it comes in.

I just received mine (Weaver SS 1.5-6) haven't had much chance to play with it and haven't shot with it yet but my 2 cents are yes the glass is great and I'm not getting any blooming nor would I call the dot to big. My only negative so far is the illumination isn't bright enough to use in full daylight.

To clarify, the dot being too big depends on what you want to do with it.  It's a ~2.5 MOA dot, and covering 2.5" inches of target at 100 yards is too much for some people.  I felt it was too much for hunting and that was the only reason I didn't buy one.  I don't think you can get a daylight visible 1-4 in this price range except for the MTAC, and that reticle is also not well suited to hunting or precision work.  If the MTAC had just done a smaller center dot or simply extended the crosshairs to the center I think it would be close to perfect for a $400 1-4.  But they didn't ask me.

The Burris and the Leupold have nice glass.  I haven't looked through a Weaver in a long time.
