Aside from the obvious differences, are there changes in the new XPS model that would make it more reliable over a 555?

I would think the transverse battery compartment on the newer XPS models would be less prone to shock, hence the problems with flickering dot's, and shutting down of the older generation 500 models.

Personally I have had both, and never had any problems, but I upgraded to the XPS later on, because of the newer more compact design, and redesigned  battery compartment.

I had a 512 a while back, and never had the typical corrosion on the contacts, but it did start draining batteries out of the blue. So I bought an Aimpoint, didn't like it, then a 1-4x, didn't like it, and now I want another EOTech sans the problems.

The size of a AA model doesn't bother me, so I guess I'm purely concerned with any updated internals / electronics that may be in the XPS series and not the 500 series. The transverse design is something to consider though, thanks for the input.

Your welcome
I'm not sure what other upgrades they put into the XPS series, besides the battery compartment, and maybe the electronics?
I like the compactness of it better myself.

I did go to aimpoints after because I like the longer battery life, but with my eye site going bad now, astigmatism,  I have to get magnification. I also went through two different 1-4x, and didn't like the bulkness of them, so now I have an Acog TA33 on they way.

I miss my EoTech's Getting older sucks

I emailed L3 to see what they say. I'll post their response.

I hear ya on the bulkiness; when I took the 1-4x off I was amazed at how much lighter it felt.

Ohh well, the search for the proverbial perfect optic continues.
