I'm looking for an optic to mount on a 24" 1/9 twist AR build I'm working on and would like to use the rifle out to 500-600 yards. I've got everything worked up and the upper on the way and now I'm working on optics and mounts. I've heard people recommend SFWA SS series, and they have several other nice mil dot scopes in my target budget ($300-400). The question is how do these optics hold up to Leupold? I've got two Leupold's and the image is very clear, and they have always held their zero. I'm sure there are other great optics out there, but I have to be realistic about my budget to income ratio.

Are they as clear and dependable as Leupold, or are they just good scopes for the money? Are there any good mil dot scopes made by Leupold that fit in my budget and will perform for what the rifle was built for?

Also, are the SFWA scopes a variable power, or a fixed power?

They have both fixed and variable models.  The HD models blow leupold away in glass quality, tracking, repeat ability, and return to zero.  They are made in Japan and are a hell of a nice scope.  I can't comment on the non HD models I've never used one.   I do own the 5-20x50 though and it is an incredible scope.
