I see alot of ARs with a rear iron sight , then either a red dot or scope , and a front sight (either fixed on the post or added ) , Im wondering what the point of the rear sight would be with a red dot system , on a regular scope it doesnt play a purpose is this just eye candy ?

They serve as backup sights should something go wrong with your red dot or scope.

I personally prefer to use folding backup iron sights (both front and back) when using optics regardless whether the optic is a red dot or a scope.

Some feel differently. Some prefer a fixed front sight at all times regardless whether the optic is a red dot or a scope.

When/if a red dot craps out ... they don't have to remove the optic. They can simply use their iron sights through the red dot optic regardless whether it is a fixed rear sight or a folding backup iron sight. If this is the case you might want to use a mount that provides a lower 1/3 cowitness as shown below:

If you use a true cowitness mount then fixed iron sights clutter your view to the point where, in my opinion, it renders the red dot sight damn near useless:

If someone is NOT going to use optics then it would make a lot of sense to have at least a fixed front sight.
