Could someone explain the differences between vortex's BDC hold and v-plex reticle or point me in the direction of a good resource on it? I think I have a basic understanding but I want to make sure I make the best choice on the reticle. I'm new to optics and I'm trying to figure out which reticle would be best for me. The scope will be used for target shooting/plinking and occasional hunting.
One question I have is from researching it seems that bdc's are only usable on the highest magnification. Is that correct? If so, how do you range a target when not at the highest magnification of your scope with a bdc reticle? (sorry if this is a basic question but I couldn't find a good resource to answer my questions through extensive searching) |

Get the BDC. Then you will hold over points for elevation and also wind holds.
Some info here. |

If you're shooting at targets at different distances (say 200 and 400 yrds) do you just make the adjustments on the turrets? |

It is possible but not easy. Stick with a rangefinder for that.
If there is little to no wind and you know your holdover points for those distances just use the reticle. If it is windy you can dial the elevation in the turret and then use the horizontal bars on the reticle for wind holds. Elevation is pretty much a constant so that is why you can dial it. Wind is constantly changing so you hold for it not dial. |

It subtends in MOA and becaus it is second focal plane it only works on the highest mag for ranging. You can use the bullet drop on any mag as long as you get good dope for your rifle with your load. I agree a range finder is much better than using the reticle but I spent quite a bit of time using it to range and would use the range finder to check my work. I could get within 10% most of the time without spending too much time on the target. |
