I'm look for a good optic that'll be good for both 50 and 100 yards.
I like the idea of acogs but i'm more in the 100-200$ range as far as optics go, and willing to go up too 250 if the optic can flip to the side so I can use my iron sights without having to detach my optic.

I'd go with a red dot optic like the Vortex Sparc, Vortex StrikeFire or a Primary Arms clone.

You won't find a red dot optic that flips to the side. You will only find magnifiers or magnifier mounts that flip to the side. Magnifiers do not alter the POI (point of impact), but a loose optic will. As far as magnifiers go, the Vortex magnifier is said to give you the BEST quality & versatility for your buck. You might exceed your budget a bit with a red dot optic, QD mount, magnifier and magnifier mount. You can stick with just a red dot for now and get a magnifier later down the road if you fell the need for one.

I always recommend using a QD mount (quick disconnect mount) so you can remove the optic and put it back on easily & quickly without losing your zero. QD mounts are very beneficial so you can swap optics on the same weapon without having to zero it back in again each time you put it back on. There are other benefits too, but removal without losing zero is #1.

but would a red dot be effective at 100 yards?

Depends on what you mean by effective.

I define effective as, 'you put the dot on target, pull the trigger and your bullet hits its intended target'. You can shoot apples out of a tree at 100 yards, but with less precision & speed as you could with an optic that has magnification.

Red dot sights are great for speed at close ranges. You can use it at longer ranges of course, but that's where your accuracy will start to diminish. In other words your groups will be larger. A magnifier would help you to tighten your groups, increase speed & accuracy at longer ranges.
