I am buying a .22lr upper and I need to pick up some iron sights or an optic for it. I think I just want to stay with iron sights though. What kind should I get? The company I am buying the upper recommended the Magpul BUIS.

On my CMMG 22lr upper, I have a TROY fixed rear sight; and on my 5.56 ARs, I have TROY flip up sights w/ optics.

So if you want fixed sights, check out Daniel Defense, LMT, and TROY. The MBUS is decent inexpensive flip up back up sight.

if it's not a "backup" sight, just get a fixed sight.  Daniel Defense, Cavalry Manufacturing both have available simple and solid fixed rear sights.  DD has a front sight also if you need one.

The Upper I am getting has a mid length hand gaurd on it so I was tould I would have to add a picatinny rail to be able to add sights.

You'd need a rail section to put on that handguard in order to have somewhere to mount a front sight.  The handguard kinda looks like a YHM, but doesn't match anything on their website, so not sure what brand it is.  Then you'd need both front and rear sights, like the Daniel Defense set.

If the barrel would happen to be .750 diameter, you could get a clamp on front sight base and put it on the barrel just in front of the handguard. Or a fold down type if you might anticipate adding optics later on.

Or you could just put on optic on it, like a red dot sight or whatever.

So If I get a picatinny rail installed on it on the front of the gaurd then I can put the front sight on the end of it?

Yes, that handguard appears to have screw holes so that sections of rail can be attached.  Add rail section to the top, put front sight on rail section.

Thanks for the help and sorry for the basic questions. Its really hard to figure out everything. I bought a colt 6920 so it was ready to shoot out of the box but now I trying to get a 22lr upper so I can shoot more.

If you had a set of calipers/micrometer or something I would measure that barrel and see if it's .749-.750.  If so I'd probably get that Armalite clamp on sight base, it'll be less expensive and give you a longer sight radius than a rail+front sight arrangement.

They are .750 and I was told this

Hand guard lengths can be swapped out between the mid- rifle- and XL-length ($10 upcharge for XL)

Picatinny rails will fit all models accordingly. I.e., 9" rail for Mid, 9" & 12" for Rifle, 9" & 12" for XL, and 3.35" for all three. Front sights can be used, as the rails are the same height as the receivers.

Would I want rifle length hand gaurds.

I'd consider getting a different upper. That upper doesn't look all that 'front sight' friendly. You would have to attach a section of rail and clamp the front sight to it. That or you could use a shorter hand guard and a railed gas block to attach a front sight. The options listed previously could replace the gas block but you'll need a shorter hand guard in order to expose the gas block.

If you will ONLY be using iron sights then I would look for an upper with a fixed front sight or one with a quad rail hand guard so you can easily attach sights or anything you want without any problems at all.

The upper you show in that pic looks like it is made more for precision using an optic.
