| Hey guys, I am building my first AR and need some help with optics. I really don't know much about which ones are better than others and for what uses. I am trying to build this on a budget so I'm not looking to spend $400 on a scope. This would be for mainly a range gun so what would be some good options to shoot out to 200-300 yards. They can be iron sights, red dot, rifle scope, etc. doesn't really matter. Thanks. |

In your shoes, it may be good to pick up a set of good iron sights and start off with those. Troy Battle Sights get great reviews all over. I think the best way to get really comfortable with your rifle is to learn how it shoots with irons, then over time upgrade to a decent optic. The problem with buying a low cost optic is that you usually end up replacing it with something more costly later. So you end up paying twice.

I would suggest using irons first, then getting an optic later, as well.
But for range use, out to 200-300 yards, and with a $400 scope budget, I suggest the Weaver V3, Millet DMS, Nikon M223, Leatherwood CMR, and the Burris TAC30 and MTAC. For an inexpensive mount, look at RRA, Wilson, Armalite, Burris PEPR, SWFA SSALT, and the DNZ. |
