I'm having trouble deciding on an optic for my truck gun/shtf rifle. I've got an opportunity to purchase an EOTECH 553 for the same price that I can get an Aimpoint PRO. I've owned a PRO in the past, and an EoTech 512. I liked the reticle in the EoTech much better, but the Aimpoint was good enough and has a much longer battery life. I am completely torn and cannot decide. So I'm needing some encouragement for one over the other. What do yall think?

own both
like both

to me these are the points

Aimpoint appears on this forum to have less defects (on owner review at say midway, EOtech gets high remarks)
Aimpoint way better battery life
Aimpoint been around a long, long time

Eo kick ass ret
Eo shes tough too
Eo Made is U.S. of A.

My suggestion:
Aimpoint on SHTF rifle (tough and battery life)
Eo on daily use weapon

This all  means, buy them both and buy them often
and put them all on a different rifle

I have complete and total confidence in the Aimpoint reliability. But, I have never had an issue with an EoTech. And the battery life is much better with the aimpoint, but I can store batteries in the Sopmod stock I have coming so it is a moot point. And my broke ass cannot afford to buy both.

i use eotechs, ive never had one fail me and with batteries like they are the CR123 models get 600hrs, i only have mine on when needed, and in SHTF i have enough batteries to last me 20+years

Irons are the way to go no batteries no electronic parts with that said

Shtf weapon and had to be a red dot... aimpoint or eotech they are both good... AA batteies are the key imo.. they are used in so many things you will always have some around...

I have. eo techs if that helps as well

I would save your coin for an Acog. No batteries. But with the two choices listed then Eotech.

As much as I love the Eotech's circle-dot reticle, there's no arguing that Aimpoints have better control ergonomics, battery life & fewer reported problems. I vote Aimpoint for serious use.

i have a 552 eo and l chose that because, 1. i got a great deal on it. 2. it takes AA batteries 3. the window is large allowing both eyes open w/ glasses on my face. i have had no issues with mine, and it takes beatings like boxers in the ring. yes, the dot is a little fuzzy if i dont have glasses on because i have astigmatism, but thats not a game changer. i can see, and get on target in same amount of time. to make adjustments is easy as well using a penny. for my life style, its fine. im a volunteer fire fighter not LEO or MIL

Of the two for that purpose, Aimpoint.  I have each on different rifles.  But, the optic on my shtf rifle which is a SOCOM16 I have the Mepota K Dot on a Sadlak airborne mount.

I would say go with the Aimpoint.  It's a SHTF weapon, meaning to me that it must be ready always.  Battery life on the Aimpoint is superior, so that is a big consideration right there.  If S really does HTF, batteries may be unavailable for a number of reasons.  I leave my Comp M3 on pretty much all the time, and I have not changed the batteries since I got it from LaRue over 3 years ago.  I'll probably change them soon anyway, but I know I'll have another solid 3 years out of the next set.  Other than that, it's a really fast sight and easy to use.

When the SHTF (as long as its not radiation, bio weapons aka plagues, chemical) a good red dot would be one that does not
need good CS....probably a back up or two that don't need batteries or leds or lasers to work...

The new Trijicon SRS sounds like it has promise as a SHTF optic:

"Equally impressive is the technology built into powering a LED lighted
1.75 MOA aiming point that includes ten brightness settings – including
three NVG settings.  The SRS is powered by a solar panel and a single,
common AA battery.  This uniquely patented configuration allows the user
years of illumination life from a single battery by offering an
intuitive "solar assist”, that is, drawing on battery power only when
the solar cell requires additional energy support for illumination based
on ambient conditions."

Scheduled for summer 2012.
