I just bought the S&W M&P Sport to do some coyote hunting and maybe an occasional deer. I am looking at optics and have ran across the NcStar's. They have the tactical look that i want as well as some variation for zoom (3-9x). Cheap scope at just a little over $100 (might be risking the "get what you pay for" saying but trying to keep a cheaper budget for right now). They come in 3 different reticle styles––mil-dot, P4 sniper, and Rangefinder. My big question is: for hunting purposes what would be better/more efficient of these styles? here is the link to a specific model I am looking at:
Also, a lighter question, is there a scope similar to the NcStar that is a better option while still having the tactical look? I am still looking on my own to possibly find other options. I am a huge noob right now with this but im learning quite a bit from this site :-) |
| there is no risk at all . you will most definatly get what you pay for which is a piece of crap that will end up in the trash soon enough. if you are wanting a 3x9 scope then check out the weaver 3x10x40 tactical that is a midway usa exclusive . its on sale right now for 299.00 . |

When it comes to optics, you really do get what you pay for.
Cheap scopes at best are going to be hit-or-miss. I've owned some cheap scopes that were really excellent, and kept them for many years, but I have also had examples of the very same scope that were absolute shit. A scope with poor quality lenses won't resolve detail well, will have distortion, poor color & contrast, piss-poor low light performance, etc. Couple that with internals that are probably not particularly well made so that the scope may or may not adjust properly, mounting screws that strip easily, etc. The LOWEST quality scope I will ever buy is the Buckmaster line from Nikon. The 3-9x40mm example is almost twice the price of the one you are looking at, but it is probably at least 10 times the scope. I've owned several of them, and all of them have been very bright and clear, with adjustments that were dead-on, and stayed put. You've spent some decent money on a pretty good rifle; don't go chincy on the scope, because you will only end up cheating yourself. edit: I have the scope that jwb47 mentioned. It is a very good scope, and the 1/10th mil adjustments track the mildot reticle perfectly. The image quality is just slightly less than the 3-9x40mm Buckmaster I mentioned though. |

Ok, so I am taking everyone's advice and looking at the Nikon M-223. I have a Nikon Buckmaster on my deer rifle and another Nikon on my TC Encore muzzy so I am familiar with Nikon quality. what i am uncertain about is the BDC 600 feature vs the Nikoplex feature. Anyone have any comments?

Anyone have any comments? they offer the 223 in rapid action turret with duplex (nikoplex) reticle. basically a yardage marked elevation turret. Then the standard turret with the BDC circle reticle. for some reason I don't mind the BDC reticle in lower powered nikons 3-9. I hate my 6-18 with BDC. I have I think 4 of the Primos 3-9's with BDC. Shame they did'nt offer it in a mil dot. |

I agree with the statement about the bdc. I have a 6x18 nikon with side focus and mildot reticle on my varmint rifle and love it , but the bdc limits you to one load or some funky adjustments. A mil-dot with adjustable turrets would be much more versitale . If they made the 2x8 with mil-dots I would be all over it like a retard on a drum set.
