I have an A4 carbine and I'm looking to put a scope on it. Is the main reason for the mounts that have offsets (i.e. Burris PEPR) to accommodate eye relief or to make room for backup sights like BUIS? Without having a scope and mount to try out it hard to decide whether to get something like the PEPR or a straight Picatinny style mount.

Its called a cantilever mount, and it is for giving you more eye relief when there is not enough rail to move the rings that far forward.

If you plan on running a BUIS you will need one thin enough to fit under the scope of your choice, like the KAC micro

The offset mount helps you to maintain the correct eye relief on the rifle scope without having to establish a cheek weld at the back of the stock.
