I was thinking about this scenario and wanted some feedback.  When I mount scopes on AR's I need the eyepiece to be pretty close to the charging handle so I get proper eye relief.  I have to use offset mounts to let the turret go far enough forward.  Has anyone tried mounting a scope with on ring on the upper and the forward ring on the free float.  It seems to me that the free float rail is stiffer than the extended mounts that cantilever forward.  I understand that the rail would need to be perfectly aligned with the upper.

I don't think that would be the best idea.  You are right that thh handgaurd rail would need to be perefct in line, whic is almost impossible.  there would also be room for error.  Also, handgaurds can shift or move ever so slightly which would cause a problem if the mounts are on two different platforms.  Now, if you have a solid upper like the LMT's, there would be no problem...just a little more money but they sure are nice!

I've seen them done like that before on a few guns but I don't care for it.

Aside from the alignment issues, there is probably a lot of wiggle between the receiver and handguard when fired, which puts all that stress on the scope body, because the rings bridge those two pieces.

I would only do it on a monolithic upper
