| I'm in the process of building a Spike's mid-length 5.56 build. It will have a flattop upper and the barrel will have the stock front sight. I've never had a flattop upper (many A2 uppers) and was curious as to a good optics setup that I can co- witness through the front site. I like the look of the AGOG units. Does the ACOG co-witness? If so, does it need a riser of any sort? Any recommendations would be appreciated. |

I personally prefer Aimpoint or EOTech over Trijicon.
If it is just for plinking it doesn't really matter...choose something that you like the looks of / what will function the best at the ranges that you shoot. I like Aimpoint / EOTech because I double my rifles as home defense type weapons and I like the speed of non magnified optics. Also, 1 AA battery will last about 8 years (constant on) in an Aimpoint CompM4...with your ACOG, the tritium is going to die on you after about 10 years and it is pretty damn expensive to get it replaced...not to mention the tritium gets progressively dimmer...after 6 years it is only about 50% as bright as it was new. The optic will still work fine during the day but it will be somewhat useless at night. As far as Aimpoint vs. EOTech...you just have to determine which reticle you like more...you will get better function and speed from EOTech but you get more reliability with the Aimpoint (and some people would argue the function of it is better too but the only shortcoming of the eotech reticle is at increased brightness levels at night at longer distances-washes out the target-but this can be fixed by only turning the brightness up as high as you absolutely need it). It sounds like you are kinda leaning towards ACOG though and that is great...i owned a TA31 for a little while and it is a really good optic esp when you shoot +300m. I shoot 3-5" groups with my EOTech and I would shoot 2-4" groups with my ACOG (@100m). |

I went with an Aimpoint M4S a while back because of the durability, simplicity, and battery life (I have had it on since July 2010 with the same AA battery).
I started wanting an ACOG as well, but didn't want to give up the co-witness ability or the close quarters capability that the Aimpoint offers. After some thinking and research, I went ahead and purchased the Aimpoint 3X magnifier in the Larue Tactical flip-to-side mount. This allows me to use the red dot with zero magnification, quickly transition to a 3X magnified optic, or just iron sights, all without removing anything from my rifle. I would definitely put some thought into this set-up if I were you. It seems to offer the most versatility, while also being the best bang for your buck. Also, having owned but Eotech and Aimpoint optics, I would go with the Aimpoint over the Eotech everytime. Aimpoint M4S Aimpoint 3X Magnifier

I like the ACOG, but it may need to wait until I do a build without a front sight. What are the best models of Aimpoints? I was just on their webpage and see M4, M3, M2. I'm just starting my research.... If weight/size are important then consider one of the Aimpoint Micros (T-1 or the less expensive and non-NVcompatible H-1) otherwise the M4 or M4S are arguably the most rugged Aimpoints currently available. If you get an ACOG with the fiber optic tube, they are warranted for 15 years from date of manufacture. 10 years in non fiber optic sights. |

I was issued a TA31 while on active duty in the Army and loved it. It worked so well for me that when I was discharged I purchased a TA01NSN for my self. I ran that for a few years and sold if for an EOTech EXPS3-2 with a G23 magnifier. That setup was great! I could easily switch between a "CQB" setup and a mid-range setup in a second. Now I think I am going to switch back to a TA31RCO. http://www.opticsplanet.net/trijicon-acog-4x32-army-rifle-combat-optic-for-the-m150-w-ta51-mount-ta31rco-m150cp-w.html The flips caps and lanyard are great features! | OK, the more I thought about this post, I realized I think I'm a dumb ass as I used the term co-witness and what I wanted to convey was that I will have a standard fronght sight and an optic, not using the rear sight. So, it appears that I can reonsider an ACOG, correct? If so, what do you recommend? |
