For my first build I have been thinking of putting a rifle length handguard on a 16" barrel. And mounting a flip up BUIS on the end of the handguard. My thinking is that the extra length of the handguard would give me a longer sight radius... and I kinda like the look of the long handguard on a CAR barrel. Also, I thought having the flip sight would allow me to move it out of the way when I want to put a scope on it temporarily.

My question is, would mounting the front sight on the handguard be a lot less accurate or potentially less accurate than mounting it on the barrel? Is there any reason that I should not have a rifle length Handguard on a 16” barrel?

Any suggestions???

I know I could just raise the scope to get it over the front sight but would like to avoid that so that I can keep a good cheek weld with a basic stock. I also know I will need a low profile gas block to fit the handguard over it.

There will be no loss of accuracy as long as your rail is mounted properly and in alignment with your upper.  I'd go with a rail mounted BUIS and m on my current SBR build.

Most of the answers are in the dissipator thread.

Go for it man, the majority of the rifles I've seen here are set up that way: rail over the gas block with a flip up. It seems like the FSB is becoming less and less common.

I was just looking at some dissipators. I like the idea of the front sight (fake FSB) being mounted on the barrel insted of the handguard. That way the freefloating handguard (if it were to become miss aligned) would not mess with the sight picture. But dont like having to commit to the front sight post. Does anyone make flip up front sights that connects to the barrel? People say that a scope would see right through the front sight but Im not to thrilled about that idea for some reason.

Just be sure to use a quality, free floating handguard to mount your flip up backup iron sight, and you'll be golden!

The drawbacks are slightly heavier weight, but the gains of a longer handguard for a more stable grip, longer sight radius, and better ergonomics for a vast majority of people make it worth it for most.

The Troy/VTAC tube handguards are the cheapest high quality rail systems IMHO.  From there you move up to Centuion Arms, then Daniel Defense/Larue/KAC, etc.

With rails, you're always looking for a trade off between

1.  Weight.
2.  Features/Durability
3.  Price.

I prefer to go with the most full featured/durable and lightweight rails... which are never the cheapest unfortunately

So? could I just buy a front sight/gas block and mount it ahead of the rail without using it as a gas block at all, and have a low profile gas block under the hand guard? So that I can run a mid-length gas system.

Does that make sense?

Several manufacturers make barrel mounted folding gas block/sights that would work. Look at PRI, ARMS, YHM, and VLTOR for examples.

+1 for TRX Extreme Battlrail. Nothing else at the $200 price point touches it.

If you use a folding BUIS on the rail, you will not see it through your scope.  With magnified optics, you only see a "ghost" of a standard front sight tower.

I would just mount a low-pro gas block under a quality rail.  If you want to use a mid length gas system go ahead, a 12" rail will cover it.
