I'm new to the world of distance shooting. I decided I'm going to pick up a Nightforce for my AR-10. I spoke to someone with Nightforce and he told me that the 5.5-22X56 doesn't work well with .308 because the drop on 308 at 1000 yard was too much for something or other in that scope, that I should go with the 3.5-15X56. I guess I'm not really understanding that. I know some scopes can be made for specific calibers, but it doesn't say that any of their scopes are. Of course I don't doubt him but I was really hoping for the higher powered scope. Can someone explain this to me?

Also is the quality of Nightforce really that signifigant over the Leupold LR/T scopes? If I went with Leupold would I have the same issue using their higher powered scopes?

That scope will work well at 1k yards, make sure you mount it to a 20 MOA rail

What he's saying is that the total elevation compensation available is inadequate to handle the drop for .308 at 1000 yards, unless you have a 20 MOA base, as mentioned above.

The scope, though, is excellent, and I highly recommend it, other than that.

I don't know what a 20 MOA base is. I have a LaRue mount for it. Is that 20 MOA?

edit: I just did some reading on 20 MOA mounts. I understand what they're saying, but it just doesn't make sense to me that rasing the scope would allow you to compensate for bullet drop more.

So back to my other question. Can those of you who are experienced with Leupold MK4 LR/T scopes, and Nightforce scopes tell a big difference in quality? And would I have the same issue using a 6.5-20X50? I can get a better deal on a Leupold than I can the Nightforce, but I've had two people. who's opinions I trust, tell me to get the Nightforce.

Leopold and nightforce don't belong in the same category. If you had asked us to compare a Nightforce to a U.S. optics, ziess, schmidt and bender, swarovski, IOR then we could have a better debate on which one is better for what you want to do. A Leopold is a descent scope and would be fine for a lot of different purposes but for long range shooting you need some of the best most capable glass out there and Leopold is not that.

Go with the Nightforce it may hurt a little over the Leopold when the bill comes but it is well worth it.

As for the 20 MOA base all you have to do is think about what your doing to make the bullet go farther and that is raising the barrel of the rifle higher in the air. Eventually the scope on a level base with 120 MOA will run out of adjustment to let you raise you barrel high enough. This is because on a level base your scope splits this adjustment 60 MOA up and 60 MOA down. With a level base you only are able to use 60 MOA in adjusting your scope up.

Add a 20 MOA base then to zero your rifle at the same point as a flat base you have to add 20 MOA down now giving you a total of 80 MOA bullet impact up adjustment to get your barrel high enough to make it out to 1000 yards.

As for the Nightforce 6.5-20X50 if it has the same MOA adjustments as the other nightforce scopes than you would still have the same problem and need a 20 MOA base.
