I need a decent spotting scope for the range . My AR wish list is too big to justify spending alot of $ on a spotter. I just want something that is clear, can pick up bullet holes at 300-400 yards and won't shit out on me if I drop it or in a light rain storm.

Sugestions?

Konus 20-60.  Best spotting scope for the money.  They run about $200 on sale.  You can get a nicer scope but it will cost you about 3 times as much.

Seeing 5.56 holes at 300-400 is difficult with spotting scopes costing in excess of $2k; put a reality check on your expectations.

Good point, the Konus is a fantastic scooe for the price but very few scopes can see a .22 hole at that range.  That's why they use pasters in high power.

I have the Konus 20-60x80 and have no problems seeing .223 holes at 300 on white paper...do it most every day even at dusk.

If the sun is not right, it can be difficult to see them on card board. Seeing them in black is all but impossible unless the sun is perfect.

Seeing holes at 500 is possible (not predictable) using white paper if the sun is perfect...otherwise forget it.

Very true, unless you hit shoot-n-see targets its an uphill battle.  If there is a mirage forget it.

On hot days I end up driving halfway down the range and spotting with binos, then heading back to the bench.
