Is it necessary to use one of the forward mounting cantilever style mounts when using a 3x9 sporting scope on a flattop AR?

Thanks, Mike.

One of the deciding factors is going to be  eye relief.  If you're a "nose to charging handle" shooter, that will automatically set the scope forward some.  Best bet before buying is to find the dimensions of the scope online, mock up a paper or cardboard model, and figure how it will sit on your rifle with proper eye relief.

That or get the optic and then decide which mount would be ideal for you. Is a cantilever necessary? No. If you try one though, you’ll probably never use anything else again.

You can't go wrong with a cantilevered mount because you can scoot it forward or back.

Here's how my Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40 was mounted on my Bushmaster Varminter. Notice how the scope and mounts are in their forward most position yet the scope protrudes well behind the charging handle:

After the LaRue mount. Soooooo much better . Notice how the scope is centered within the mount and the mount is in its forward most position. I could move the scope forward or back. I can move the mount back if I wanted to also. In other words ... you can place your scope in the most ideal location for you. Since it is a QD mount I can remove the scope in about 2-3 seconds. I can also put the scope back on in about 2-3 seconds without losing zero! There are a lot of advantages to using a good mount.

No problem!

Just to be fair, I used a cheapo cantilever mount before buying the LaRue mount. It just didn't support the scope like I felt it should.

The expense of rigging it up like it was before (in the trash now), the cost of this cheap cantilever mount (in the trash now) and all the frustration involved ... would have been well worth having used the LaRue mount to begin with. At the time I just thought these expensive mounts were a 'status symbol', unnecessary and something that could be achieved without spending all that money. I've learned that only serious mount manufacturers make good mounts.

I greatly respect your opinion.

My problem is I have two kids with a AR each.

Two La Rue mounts+ two scopes= a lot of money to spend for a couple of weekends of deer hunting.

Any ideas?
