I have a DPMS LR-308 with a 4-12 Nikon with BDC scope. and I get 1-2" groups @ 200 yards with it.. (a group being 10 shots)
now I recently bought a DPMS 5.56 Oracle and have the MBUS and a Bushnell T 3 MOA Red Dot.. I am getting 3 to 3 3/4" groups at 100 yards, and under 6" groups at 200 yards.. (with a front BAG only with my hand under the HG and on top of the BAG).. [MIND THE FACT the 3 MOA Red Dot..].. so overall this is pretty tight.. aka point and shoot.. with the MBUS I'm getting 4" groups at 100 yards and 8-9" groups at 200 yards.. I was entertaining a 2-7 or a fixed 6x scope for the 5.56 to work on getting tiny 'GROUPS' to brag about.. Keep the 5.56 with just a RD and MBUS for say out to 250 yards as a primary??? keep the 308 for the DINNER or SNIPER shots?? Thats my current SHTF policy... but I'd like some input.. I figure carrying 2 rifles (about 19 Lbs total) slung over my shoulder, 6 loaded mags for the 5.56 and 4 loaded mags for the 308 would be enough to carry.. and a 15 Lb. small camcorder bag with extra ammo and cleaning supplys.. What would/do you folks do?? do you keep 1 rifle for LONG-DISTANCE with a scope, and 1 without for the SHTF scenerio?? Every rifle/firearm should have a purpose... whats the consensus of the board?? As much as I like the 7.62 mm, and I am waiting for mine just now, for ITSHTF I would think the 5.56 is superior.
For a Deer it´s enough. It will put down two legged Vermin. It will hold more rounds, 30 vs 20, the gun will be lighter and handier, and, and I needed a LOT of time to acknowledge this, it´s QUICKER! Honestly: for CQC a 7.62 is a DISadvantage! Go hunting with your 7.62 mm, or use it for long range shooting or home defense. If you have to walk around, get a 16" Middy with the best setup you can imagine. Use the best METAL mags for ITSHTF ( unloaded, until needed ) Use plastic mags for the range and ready use ( I am gonna get flamed, but this is MY opinon, and this is what I WOULD and WILL do! ) I prefer mag pouches for 2 mags. Not Black - that´s easy to see in NV equipment - good old OD will do, but Marpad or, depending on area, modern "desert" schemes will work well, too. A vest with 3 x 2 or 4 x 2 mag pouches for 30 rounders, or 3 x 2 for 30´s and 2 x 2 for 20 rounders ( Match or SP ammo ), and cleaning kit and spare ammo ( and other Survival necessities ). I like my mag pouches to open as silent as possible. A pistol - small and in 9 mm - with at least 2 spare mags - is used for "undercover" recon, or for "camp" use, with the rifle nearby, but not directly at me. It´s not necessary, when I carry a rifle / carbine. I would shave any gram of weight from rifle and equipment, but I would not cut down on AMMO! Not more Mags, AMMO! As much as i am able to carry. I would use a 1 - 4 od 1 - 6 x scope in QR mount, with etched reticle, so it´ll work without batteries, too. BUIS of Alu and Steel, best available, of course ( e.g. Troy ) I would carry some SP ammo, too. Hermann |

For SHTF stick with a single rifle in 5.56. As for optics, if you want to get close to a do it all rifle, either get a 1-4x, 1-6x, or a 1-8x when they come out, or get a combination like a 4x ACOG and add a offset mount aimpoint T1. The ACOG and Aimpoint weights combined together is under 20 oz, so the pair is less than many scopes.
As for length, I think 16" mid is the best compromise between manuverabilty, weight and distance/terminal capability. |

I agree with most everything here with the exception of "METAL mags". Use what works for you as long as they are durable and reliable. And keep them loaded, springs don't soften from sitting under tension, only use. However, I use PMAGS and the feed lips can spread over time. Keeping the dust cover on them not only keeps them clean and ready, but it takes the load of the lips by pushing the rounds down just a hair. The bottom of the carrier does the same thing if you chose keep the rifle ready. Also, my SHTF carbine sports a fashionable and functional 1-4x. I can hold nearly moa with it and some concentration.
