Ok so I have a red dot and wanna get a magnifier for it, problem is I'm retarded as all hell on effectiveness of magnifications.  That being said for an all around, shtf, recreational, fo time, 14.5'' barreled ar, what kind of magnification would I want?

What range is 3x most effective for? 4x? 5x?  I'm terribly confused and its not feasible for me to try out all kinds to pick the best one so I was hoping someone might be able to help give me a more clear picture(usin puns ) on which to pick.  Thanks.

A good general way to look at it is to give yourself 100 yards of distance per 1x magnification. So theoretically, a 3x magnifier would help you get out to 300 yards. So how far are you looking to shoot? What will be your most common distance and max distance?

Thanks,
