Ok - so I shoot at a local 100 yard range. I'm not sure that binoculars would quite get it. I have some 10x binoculars and they do not quite get it. I have to disrupt other's shooting to go down and look I'm sure if I bought some of those targets that highlight the bullet hole I would be fine with the binoculars, but those suckers are like $12 for 5 of them. I usually print my own targets.
I'm looking to get a spotting scope so that I can see the 100 yard target properly. Does anyone know of any decent spotting scopes that are less than $200 that would serve this purpose (not for use in harsh weather or in hunting as I do not hunt, but rather just observing target hits from some shooting tables at 100 yards). Anyone have an idea of a spotting scope that would fit these parameters? I'm looking at these two currently: Yukon 20-50x50 and Konus 20-60x80 If you can't tell - i'm on a tight budget |
| If you are only using it for 100 yards you don't have to spend a lot of money. At that yardage pretty much anything will get the job done. The Konus spotting scope get some very good reviews for a budget scope. When you get out to 200 and 300 yards is where you are gonna have to spend some money on better glass. Burris also makes some decent ones for under $200. |

Konus Spot is great, and BHVideo has them for only $189 w/ Free shipping which is a great deal. LINK The Konus 80mm allows you to see bullet trace pretty nicely under mildly cloudy-sunny conditions which is great for calling shots. I can see 223 holes out to 200Y w/ good conditions. Any spotting scope worth its salt will be able to see holes at 100Y no problem. I have one of the Yukon's exactly like the one you show. I can see 223 holes out to 400-yards. 100-yards you can read the fine print on the target's. 223 holes out to 400Y...? Are you sure you're not exaggerating? I've looked through a Kowa 82mm which is in most respects top of the line and I can't see bullet holes from a 308 at your reported ranges...ETA: OP, sent you an IM- let me know. |
| Do yourself a favor and check out some Astronomical Binoculars before you pull the trigger on the spotting scope. I have a pair of 20x80 and they seem much better than my Pentax 80ed (20-60x) spotting scope. Using both eyes seems to be a big benefit when watching bullets track downrange. Also it's much easier to see contrast which makes spotting bullet holes easier. In addition, they're much better in low light situations. Finally, I find the binoculars more comfortable to look through. Not everyone knows about astronomical binoculars so I thought I would throw that into the mix... |

I have a Konus 80 and love it. Here is a link for a pretty good deal. ETA Here is a thread with some more info. |
| I found a great deal on the Yukon scope sub $100 with tripod. I'll let you know how it turns out. Won't be able to comment on the 400 yards - range is only 100 yards :) I can almost see the holes with my 10x binoculars so I am expecting to see them unless the image is blurry or something... |
I have received the scope and used it at the range over the weekend. I'm not sure what the guy was talking about with reading the fine print on the target at 100 yards as the image is not clear enough for that at 100 yards (or at least through my eyes it is not). Maybe he has a slightly different model or something. Anyways, that said, it is certainly quite adequate for spotting at 100 yards. Really helped my son and I improve our shooting skills over the weekend with one spotting and the other shooting. I can't speak to whether this is any good for greater than 100 yards as my local range is only 100 yards. Good purchase, however, the included tripod is quite nice for table top usage. The box it came in is a nice storage box for the setup. The bag that comes with it is pretty nearly useless, however . Fine adjustments on the tripod are easily used and work well. Scope itself is easily focused and has a very clear picture on the lower magnifications which we used on the 25 yard pistol range. You can't go wrong with this for $100.

I have no experience with them... 20-60 is higher power than the one I just bought - 15-45x It really comes down to is the picture clear enough at 60x to be useable...
ETA: it has a 60mm opening ... to get exit pupil 60/60 - 1mm exit pupil. Your eyes are 2.5-7mm pupils depending on lighting conditions. This will have a dark image on a cloudy day etc... Night it would be unusable at 60x 20x would probably be ok: 20/60 = 3mm I've seen some that have a 80mm opening - 60/80 = 2mm at 60x which is better for sure. Basically if your exit pupil is smaller than your actual pupil the image will appear dark. You get the exit pupil by dividing the magnification by the diameter of the opening at the front of the scope. At night, your pupil may be up to 7mm in size - not that people shoot at the range at night |
