Greetings,

I'd like to enhance my skill on iron sights on my AR and would like to explore shooting at further distance.  I have a question on the LMT (chopped carry handle type sight) rear sight.

The one I have is marked 3/6 on the elevation dial.  From what I've read, it's calibrated for M855 w/ a carbine length gas tube FSB.  Use the small aperture to dial in for 300 yards (which, I think can be roughly achieved w/ a 25meter zero) and zero at the 3/6 elevation point on the elevation dial.  The larger apeture that has the 0-200 marking, should come in roughly w/ a 50/200 zero.  I've read a few posts on how to zero this sight for X distance and understand that.  Molon has an oustanding thread on the subject here.

Since I'm running a midlength gas tube FSB, am I wrong in thinking that the elevation dial would not correctly dial in the elevation as listed on the elevation drum?  If so, would anyone know how to compensate for that distance on the elevation dial.

For example....

If using a carbine length FSB, shooting M855 at say 400 yards, the elevation dial is turned to "4" and the rounds are going on target, what kind of elevation shift would there be using a midlength FSB?  Is there a KISS formula that can be used to roughly correctly calibrate the elevation drum for a given distance?  Something like, for every 100 yards out, turn the elevation dial to that distance and +/-1 click x distance.  In other words, if shooting at 500 yards, turn elevation dial to the "5" mark and increase/back off 5 clicks (not sure if you'd be adding or removing clicks).

Now to find a greater than 300 yard range to shoot at.

The elevation wheel is either 1/2, or 1 MOA, per click.
I think that you are over thinking this.

ETA: Have you read Molon's thread here on the RIBZ?

Thanks for your reply.

Am I overthinking this? .... absof***inglutely, but I tend to do that.

I've read Molon's RIBZ info, and actually placed a link to it in the OP.  Reading that thread is what got me thinking on this track.  Unfortunately, and maybe I missed it, I didn't come across anything that mentioned how to transpose/recalibrate the LMT rear w/ a 3/6 on the elevation wheel to a midlength FSB.  I'm sure it's not much of a difference, but.......... I'd still like to know.

See page 6 of the RIBZ thread and the response from Hallorann.

Using a 1/2MOA click rear sight, the difference between the M-4 and a Mid-Length is VERY minimal.
