I am looking to spruce up my Grendel. I would like to remove the standard handguard and install a light weight railed freefloated hand guard. I am wanting to install a flashlight on the bottom rail for night pig hunts, but not looking forward to gripping a lot of rails with my left hand.
Does this kind of railed hand guard even exist? |
| Yes. Look at the Troy TRX battle rails. You will like them. http://troyind.com/%20/battlerails/troy-battlerail-trx-extreme-9-black |
| Take a look at spikes tactical new SAR rail. Weighs less than DD lite rails. LINK |

As mentioned the Troy Rails sounds like what you are looking for. The Sampson rails are looking better and better too. If you are "not looking forward to gripping lots of rails", the before mentioned SAR rail is not what you need. Also avoid the marketing trap of "my rail is lighter than your rail", sometimes lighter it better, sometimes it is definitely not. Since you mention hunting I assume you are going to want a quality rail system that will hold up to the abuse that sometimes happens with hunting and especially night hunting, you should probably steer away from the "pretty rails" too. When most people mention FF Handguards, Rails etc the name Daniel Defense always pops up.,Their rails are second to none and are usually the ones people try to compare too, but very seldom equal or surpass. But they haven't had anything that fits your specific needs.wants until now..or at least coming very soon, but I think they are already taking pre-orders for them. They have a new line of Hunting Rifles in the works with a new brand called "Ambush". The new teaser website is here http://www.ambushfirearms.com/ and I assume more pics will be there of the rifles and the new rail soon. Below are a few teaser pics showing the "Ambush Modular free float rail", (not sure if that will be the name or not. I assume you will be able to get them in normal Milspec black and Camo versions too. Joe from DD posted this over in their section about the new rail... Quoted:
The official name for this is the Modular Float Tube. It's a 12" Free Float Tube with a 1.61" ID. It will come with 3 Picatinny Rail Sections which can be installed to the tube even when it's installed on your upper. It will also allow you to mount your accessory rails at the angles for maximum diversity. We don't have a solid release date on these, but we anticipate to have them available around the middle of March. MSRP is $249. Anyone can call us up to place a pre-order. S/F Joe Sounds like the price is going to be good and since it is DD there is no doubt the quality will be top notch, and they will stand behind them like they do all of their products.

It's cool that DD is doing that, but it appears as if they are using a speI chambered barrel, from the 1:10 twist, anyway....from which I've gathered, pretty much wastes the potential of faster 6.8 hunting loads? If so, what a letdown. Anyhoo, a carbon fiber FF tube might be a good fit for your Grendel.....at least those from JP and others arte what I have been eyeballing for a grendel (or possibly 6.8) build here lately. |

IIRC That spec was for a large custom order by someone, it is my understanding that will change with production consumer released versions. There is a thread about it in DD's area in the Industry Forums here. I think it was called "New Rifle" and that very subject was discussed there, Also while I love just about anything Carbon Fiber and some of my first racing products I designed/sold were CF, I am not so sure that would be the best choice for a hunting rifle, a benchrest/SG/Competition rifle yes, a rifle hunting rifle that some or a lot will get tossed in the back of pickups etc...probably not the best material. |
